As the sketch unfolded, nobody seemed willing to take it, despite the great rewards. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/entertainment\/saturday-night-live-sketch-mocking-coronavirus-hesitency-black-community\">Fox News<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"22.539488320356\">\n<p><em>In the sketch, Kaluuya\u2019s character begins by offering his four family members $500 to simply take the vaccine. As the sketch goes on, the total eventually reaches $20,000 but it is never enough to dampen his family member\u2019s hesitancy to take the vaccine despite close to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/sports\/us-draws-close-to-100m-vaccinations-as-baseball-resumes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">100 million people<\/a>&nbsp;in the U.S. having been administered the dose.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>One family member notes that he\u2019ll start doing it when White people start taking the shot. When he is informed that many people have been given the shot, he paradoxically notes \u201cyou can\u2019t trust White people.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The character\u2019s aunt turns down a dose because she says she read on Facebook that Christians can\u2019t take the vaccine. Meanwhile, another relative reveals that he would do several non-coronavirus-friendly things like large gatherings if he won the prize money, but still refused to take the vaccine despite being extremely high-risk.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Several doctors on Twitter immediately took to Twitter to voice their displeasure over the sketch, particularly with how it failed to address the nuances regarding vaccine hesitancy in the African-American community.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">\u201cNo. No. No. <\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\"><a class=\"css-4rbku5 css-18t94o4 css-901oao css-16my406 r-1n1174f r-1loqt21 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\" role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nbcsnl?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1378780566858960898%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.foxnews.com%2Fentertainment%2Fsaturday-night-live-sketch-mocking-coronavirus-hesitency-black-community\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-focusable=\"true\">@nbcsnl<\/a><\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">, how did this skit even make it on air? This skit is irresponsible as it further perpetuates vaccine disparities as being due to Black Americans being ignorant for a good laugh and portrays black healthcare providers as manipulative. (2\/2)<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Krys Foster MD MPH (@DrKFosterMD) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrKFosterMD\/status\/1378783114588254212?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 4, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This past December, former Trump administration Surgeon General Jerome Adams cautioned that black Americans have a distrust of the COVID-19 vaccine due to America\u2019s history of medical racism, using them as guinea pigs in health experiments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that long before COVID, there were many diseases \u2015 hypertension, cancer, diabetes \u2015 that were plaguing communities of color,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/surgeon-general-black-americans-distrust-covid-19-vaccine-due-to-past-medical-racism\">Adams said<\/a>&nbsp;on \u201cFace the Nation.\u201d&nbsp;\u201cAnd COVID just unveiled those disparities that have been around for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve talked previously about the history of the mistreatment of communities of color,\u201d he added. \u201cThe Tuskegee experiment, the terrible treatment of Henrietta Lacks and her family and how they just took her cells without her permission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adams also understood the significance of his being a black surgeon general in light of how the position had been abused in the past.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt actually comes from my office, several surgeons general oversaw for 40 years the Tuskegee studies where treatment was denied to Black men,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I walk past their pictures every single day when I go into my office. So believe you me, this legacy is important to me, and helping restore that trust is important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I want to tell people most of all is: I walk the talk. I got vaccinated on Friday. I actually feel great. My mother-in-law and my mother are watching, and they\u2019ve been asking me all weekend, \u2018How are you feeling?\u2019 I feel great,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd I hope people will get the vaccine based on information that they get from trusted resources. Because it\u2019s OK to have questions.
