Shared Responsibility\u201d project, in the \u201cRespect: Diversity + Inclusion\u201d section was an article titled \u201cGun ownership among Black Americans is soaring.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c\u2018In times of uncertainty people want to be able to have the means to defend themselves,\u2019 a law professor said,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/changing-america\/respect\/diversity-inclusion\/546454-gun-ownership-among-black-americans-is-soaring\">article<\/a> begins.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"4.2985074626866\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Gun ownership among Black Americans is soaring <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/eb8ULoz4Ag\">https:\/\/t.co\/eb8ULoz4Ag<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/OyFTYLMXrK\">pic.twitter.com\/OyFTYLMXrK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Hill (@thehill) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thehill\/status\/1379130489659854850?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 5, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>The \u201cstory at a glance\u201d is that \u201cBlack gun owners are responsive to white on black violence,\u201d and that \u201cThere is a correlation between the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and Philando Castile and Black gun owners, according to reports.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The tone of the article appears to make the deliberate argument that there is a direct link between \u201cwhite violence\u201d and \u201cblack gun ownership,\u201d while subtly implying that such a link is the primary driving factor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBlack people are buying guns at a high record rate, partially due to fear and anxiety, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2021\/apr\/05\/us-gun-ownership-black-americans-surge?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other\"><span>The Guardian<\/span><\/a><span>,\u201d the Hill report continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBlack people owning guns have gone up 58.2 percent, according to the<\/span><span> National Shooting Sports Foundation<\/span><span> (NSSF) \u2014 and gun groups like the \u2018Not F**king Around Coalition (NFAC)\u2019 consist of armed social justice advocates who demand justice for George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, visibly strapped with handguns.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Later, the article discussed \u201cThe National African American Gun Association (NAAGA), a Black alternative to the National Rifle Association (NRA),\u201d which \u201csaw its membership increase rapidly to about 30,000 members\u201d in 2019 following Philando Castile\u2019s death. The organization, which has been in business since 2015, has 75 chapters nationwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBlack people and women of color like to come to our facility because we\u2019re not the typical redneck with a tattoo of the <\/span><span>Three Percenters<\/span><span>,\u201d said Anubis Heru, the owner of the first black-owned firearm store and simulator range in Denver, according to the Hill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A brief analysis, however, shows that this report is potentially guilty of cherry-picking from among a small proportion of black gun owners in order to promote the claim that \u201cwhite violence\u201d is a central concern for the black community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The NFAC is a black nationalist paramilitary organization with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Not_Fucking_Around_Coalition\"><span>reported<\/span><\/a><span> membership size of 3,500, and the NAAGA has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_African_American_Gun_Association\"><span>reported<\/span><\/a><span> 34,000 members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2017\/06\/22\/the-demographics-of-gun-ownership\/\"><span>Pew Research Center<\/span><\/a><span>, black people make up 24% of gun owners, while white people account for 36% of gun owners and Hispanics make up 15% of gun owners. In terms of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/quickfacts\/fact\/table\/US\/PST045219\"><span>total population<\/span><\/a><span>, black people make up 13.4% of the population. <\/span><span>With around 72 million people <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wamu.org\/story\/20\/09\/18\/how-many-people-in-the-u-s-own-guns\/\"><span>reported<\/span><\/a><span> to own a firearm in the United States, this means that over 17 million black people own firearms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This also means that just 0.18% of these people are members of the NAAGA, and 0.02% are members of the NFAC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Given that the vast majority of black gun owners are not members of these groups, it seems strange that the Hill focused so heavily on these organizations in particular. Indeed, the original Guardian report referenced by the Hill didn\u2019t provide any insight regarding the proportion of black gun owners who were motivated by a fear of \u201cwhite violence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThough Black Americans have a multitude of reasons for buying a gun \u2013 some new gun owners told the Guardian about stress related to the pandemic, others about the anxiety of seeing scores of armed white protesters rallying against lockdown orders or the election results,\u201d the Guardian reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The careful selection of examples, along with the militaristic image chosen for the article itself, suggests that the reality of gun ownership has \u2014 yet again \u2014 been editorialized to suit a broader political narrative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
