Greg Abbott announced a ban on government-mandated vaccine passports Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>The Republican governor issued an <a href=\"https:\/\/gov.texas.gov\/uploads\/files\/press\/EO-GA-35_private_health_information_protection_vaccines.pdf\">executive order<\/a> on Monday banning any regulation that would require Texans to show proof of vaccination before getting a product or service. The order also blocks all businesses or entities receiving state funds from requiring vaccine documentation, as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery day, Texans return to normalcy as more people get the COVID vaccine. In fact, this week, Texas will surpass 13 million doses administered,\u201d Abbott said in a Tuesday video announcement. \u201cThose shots help slow the spread of COVID, reduce hospitalizations, and reduce fatalities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut, as I have said all along, these vaccines are always voluntary and never forced. Government should not require any Texan to show proof of vaccination and reveal private health information just to go about their daily lives,\u201d the governor continued. \u201cThat is why I issued an executive order that prohibits government-mandated vaccine passports in Texas. We will continue to vaccinate more Texans and protect public health and we will do so without treading on Texans\u2019 personal freedoms.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"11.45896656535\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Texans shouldn&#8217;t be required to show proof of vaccination &amp; reveal private health information just to go about their daily lives.<\/p>\n<p>I issued an Executive Order that prohibits government-mandated vaccine passports in Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t tread on our personal freedoms. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/weTbz4FKyH\">pic.twitter.com\/weTbz4FKyH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Greg Abbott (@GregAbbott_TX) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GregAbbott_TX\/status\/1379388416626884610?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 6, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The order exempts nursing homes and long-term care facilities, allowing them to require proof of vaccination as need to protect their residents.<\/p>\n<p>Abbott\u2019s order comes after Florida Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/florida-gov-ron-desantis-delivers-on-promise-bans-vaccine-passports-with-executive-order\">Ron DeSantis<\/a> issued a similar order last week. DeSantis announced his intention at a press conference in March.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s completely unacceptable for either the government or the private sector to impose upon you the requirement that you show proof of vaccine to just simply participate in normal society,\u201d the Republican governor said. \u201cYou want to go to a movie theater, should you have to show that? No. You want to go to a game, a theme park? No. So we\u2019re not supportive of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe always said we wanted to provide it for all but mandate it for none,\u201d he continued. \u201cAnd that was something that, while it was advised to take particularly if you\u2019re vulnerable, we were not going to force you to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis said that vaccine passports would be a significant threat to Americans\u2019 privacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re going to do this and, what, give all this information to some big corporation? You want the fox to guard the hen house? I mean give me a break,\u201d the governor said. \u201cI think this is something that has huge privacy implications. It is not necessary to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New York became the first state to implement a COVID-19 vaccine passport in February. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/desantis-vows-to-issue-executive-order-to-ban-vaccine-passports-in-florida\">The Daily Wire<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"22\">\n<p><em>Called the Excelsior Pass, the passport will be at first used at large venues like Madison Square Garden. But next week, arts and entertainment venues across the state will be using it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAs they would with an airline boarding pass, people will be able to prove their health status with a digital QR code \u2013 or \u2018quick response\u2019 machine-readable label,\u201d USA Today reported.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThey\u2019ll need to download the Excelsior Pass app, enter their name, date of birth, and ZIP code, and answer a series of personal questions to confirm their identity.
