\/><\/div>\n<p>The doctor who declared George Floyd dead said Monday on the stand that he believed Floyd died of cardiac arrest caused by an oxygen deficiency, or asphyxia.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Bradford Langenfeld said that, initially, one of his \u201cleading theories\u201d was that excited delirium, which can be caused by drugs, triggered the lack of oxygen.<\/p>\n<p>Langenfeld, though, thought at the time that this was unlikely because paramedics did not indicate to him that the then-unidentified man was sweating or appeared agitated \u2014 both very common in drug overdoses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen a lot of cases of mental health crises or drug use leading to severe agitated states,\u201d he said. \u201cThat is almost always reported by paramedics, and so the absence of that information was telling.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"5.8719512195122\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Dr. href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/05\/us\/what-is-excited-delirium.html\">According<\/a> to The New York Times, there isn\u2019t&nbsp;a \u201cgenerally accepted definition of excited delirium, according to <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28990246\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a 2018 review<\/a> of the scientific literature, but it is used to describe someone who becomes distressed or aggressive from a mental illness or the use of psychoactive drugs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Langenfeld, who was the prosecution\u2019s first witness, later acknowledged to&nbsp;Eric Nelson, a defense attorney for former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin,<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">&nbsp;that drug use, specifically fentanyl and methamphetamine use, could cause hypoxia or asphyxiation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Here\u2019s how part of the exchange went:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"17\">\n<p><em><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Nelson: There are <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Nelson: Drug use, certain drugs, can cause hypoxia?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Langenfeld: Correct.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Nelson: Specifically fentanyl?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Langenfeld: That\u2019s correct.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Nelson: How about <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">methamphetamine?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Langenfeld: It can.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Nelson: Combination of the two?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Langenfeld: Yes.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Nelson also questioned Langenfeld about carbon dioxide levels relative to shortness of breath.<\/p>\n<p>The doctor agreed that higher levels of CO2 can lead to a sensation of a shortness of breath, even without added stress.&nbsp;Langenfeld also said that <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">fentanyl can cause higher CO2 levels, \u201cbecause it depresses the ventilation, or the breathing.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Floyd\u2019s CO2 levels were double what is average when Langenfeld attended to him, he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" did he have a heartbeat sufficient to \u201csustain life.\u201d After a half hour of working on Floyd, the emergency room doctor declared him dead.<\/p>\n<p>After officers were notified on May 25 that Floyd allegedly gave counterfeit money at a convenience store, Chauvin and three other officers arrested and detained Floyd. Viral video shows that&nbsp;Chauvin kneeled on Floyd\u2019s neck for nearly nine minutes while detaining Floyd.<\/p>\n<p>Chauvin\u2019s attorneys are arguing that Floyd\u2019s drug use was a crucial factor in his death, as was emphasized on Monday. As highlighted by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/george-floyds-girlfriend-floyd-hospitalized-for-overdose-months-earlier-drug-dealer-with-him-during-arrest\">The Daily Wire<\/a>, the Hennepin County <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/medical-examiner-concluded-george-floyd-likely-died-of-fentanyl-overdose-court-docs-reveal\">medical examiner<\/a> said that Floyd\u2019s autopsy showed the deceased had potentially lethal levels of drugs in his system.<\/p>\n<p>Chauvin is currently on trial for&nbsp;second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in relation to Floyd\u2019s death. The former officer&nbsp;can be found guilty of all, some, or none of the charges since they are all separate.<\/p>\n<p>Since he has no criminal history, Chauvin is likely looking at \u201cserving about 12 1\/2 years whether he is convicted of second or third-degree murder,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/derek-chauvin-trial-murder-charge-explained-5e7c935f560219caee61fcc0bef0a23d\">according<\/a> to The Associated Press.
