He\u2019s still not going to mock the half of the country marinating in the progressive yuks delivered by Kimmel, Stephen Colbert and their far-left chums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cDemocrats tend to target groups. It\u2019s not just Trump, it\u2019s Trump voters or those stupid Republicans and gun nuts,\u201d Gutfeld says. He has no issue mocking President Joe Biden, Sen. Chuck Schumer or other progressive leaders. He\u2019s not gunning for their voters, though.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s off limits,\u201d Gutfeld says. \u201cYou don\u2019t punch down, go after groups of everyday Americans. You understand there\u2019s a variety among groups. Even within groups there are vast differences between them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That approach, plus Gutfeld\u2019s vow not to insult Red State U.S.A., offers a truly fresh late night experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He wouldn\u2019t be surprised if his new show attracts its fair share of liberals. It wouldn\u2019t be the first time. His gonzo Fox News debut, the cult favorite \u201cRed Eye,\u201d did just that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The differences between \u201cGutfeld!\u201d and existing shows don\u2019t end with a host unwilling to infuriate half the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cGutfeld!\u201d isn\u2019t obsessed with landing traditional late night guests, like George Clooney or Tom Hanks. He praises the old-school interviews conducted by David Letterman, but the NBC legend toiled at a time when publicists had less control over the late-night landscape, he says. More recently, the stars\u2019 publicists took greater ownership of the process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBe nice to my talent, or you won\u2019t get any more talent,\u201d he says, a \u201cgame\u201d he has little interest in playing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe guests have to be interesting to me \u2026 or there\u2019s something about them that excites me,\u201d Gutfeld says. \u201cNinety-eight percent of them are not actors with a big project [to promote]. They are scientists, inventors, unusual people \u2026 cult-level performers and directors I\u2019m super interested in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019m confident that what\u2019s interesting to me is of interest [to] the viewer because I\u2019m the viewer,\u201d he adds of his Everyman approach. \u201cMaybe it would be great if I interviewed Clooney, but I\u2019m not gonna have fun doing that, and I want have fun.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Appearing on Fox News may make it harder for them to get traditional Hollywood guests anyway. Can anyone imagine a far-left \u201cWill &amp; Grace\u201d star stepping foot onto a Fox News stage to chat about wacky behind-the-scenes moments?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Some late-night hosts crash and burn on arrival, like Chevy Chase\u2019s disastrous showcase back in 1993. Others eke it out a bit longer but eventually fail, like Magic Johnson, Larry Wilmore and Hasan Minhaj.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cGutfeld!\u201d has plenty of momentum to start its run.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Greg Gutfeld Show,\u201d which aired on Saturday nights, gave Fox News the second highest rated late-night program behind CBS\u2019s \u201cThe Late Show.\u201d It\u2019s all the more impressive since it was a non-broadcast TV show that aired on weekends. Even more noteworthy is that Gutfeld\u2019s program lapped Colbert\u2019s \u201cShow\u201d sporadically last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cGutfeld!\u201d viewers can expect an opening monologue in the grand late-night tradition, but that\u2019s where the similarities dry up, he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He recalls watching a \u201chorrendous\u201d clip of Jimmy Fallon interviewing Gov. Andrew Cuomo on \u201cThe Tonight Show,\u201d among many reasons he\u2019s hoping to offer something fresh to the formula.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The \u201cgreat\u201d jokes told by his new peers are few and far between.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One reason why? The Kimmels, Meyers and Colberts are often scoring partisan political points, with some monologues devoid of anything resembling humor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Gutfeld wants to avoid the \u201cclapter\u201d trap, and he knows one way to do it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He says sometimes on the old \u201cGutfeld\u201d show the tone would get too serious, and he\u2019d recognize the problem between segments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYou have to start thinking, \u2018what am I here for?\u2019 I\u2019m the clown who is supposed to turn the burner down,\u201d he says, a task that\u2019s \u201csometimes impossible when the topics are so volatile.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He wants to make a late-night show that captures the Johnny Carson model, where audiences go to bed with a smile, not a scowl.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYou wanna be able to talk about the news, make people laugh and have a good time and go to bed thinking they got something out of it,\u201d he says, one reason he tries not to read Twitter before he calls it a day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a way, \u201cGutfeld!\u201d is a natural extension of his eponymous Saturday show, down to returning cohorts like Kat Timpf and Tyrus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere\u2019s a bunch of knobs on this show, and we up the frequency,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s a domino effect. What happens when you take something from one and you take it to five? More guests, more segments, and you end up taking risks you normally wouldn\u2019t take.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That approach isn\u2019t possible with a once-a-week showcase, where chemistry can\u2019t be built as quickly over a period of days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYou can\u2019t have \u2018call back\u2019 conversations if you\u2019re not on every day,\u201d he says. \u201cYou get a tougher skin [with the nightly format] and weird s*** happens.
