Mark Pocan (D-WI) took a swipe at Amazon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaying workers $15\/hr doesn\u2019t make you a \u2018progressive workplace\u2019 when you union-bust &amp; make workers urinate in water bottles,\u201d he wrote on Twitter on March 24.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon fired back, saying Pocan was suckered in. \u201cYou don\u2019t really believe the peeing in bottles thing, do you? If that were true, nobody would work for us. The truth is that we have over a million incredible employees around the world who are proud of what they do, and have great wages and health care from day one,\u201d the mega-corp responded on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope you can enact policies that get other employers to offer what we already do,\u201d Amazon wrote to the lawmaker.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"12.425867507886\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">1\/2 You don\u2019t really believe the peeing in bottles thing, do you? The truth is that we have over a million incredible employees around the world who are proud of what they do, and have great wages and health care from day one.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Amazon News (@amazonnews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amazonnews\/status\/1374911222361956359?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 25, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But on Friday, Amazon did a U-turn \u2014 and eventually acknowledged that workers do in fact pee in bottles in order to meet deadlines \u2014 if in a roundabout way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn Wednesday last week, the @amazonnews Twitter account tweeted the following back to Representative Mark Pocan,\u201d Amazon wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutamazon.com\/news\/policy-news-views\/our-recent-response-to-representative-pocan?tracking_id=leeenter0889-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">post<\/a> on its corporate news website.<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"42\">\n<p>This was an own-goal, we\u2019re unhappy about it, and we owe an apology to Representative Pocan.<\/p>\n<p>First, the tweet was incorrect. It did not contemplate our large driver population and instead wrongly focused only on our fulfillment centers. A typical Amazon fulfillment center has dozens of restrooms, and employees are able to step away from their work station at any time. If any employee in a fulfillment center has a different experience, we encourage them to speak to their manager and we\u2019ll work to fix it.<\/p>\n<p>Second, our process was flawed. The tweet did not receive proper scrutiny. We need to hold ourselves to an extremely high accuracy bar at all times, and that is especially so when we are criticizing the comments of others.<\/p>\n<p>Third, we know that drivers can and do have trouble finding restrooms because of traffic or sometimes rural routes, and this has been especially the case during Covid when many public restrooms have been closed.<\/p>\n<p>This is a long-standing, industry-wide issue and is not specific to Amazon. We\u2019ve included just a few links below that discuss the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the fact that this is industry-wide, we would like to solve it. We don\u2019t yet know how, but will look for solutions.<\/p>\n<p>We will continue to speak out when misrepresented, but we will also work hard to always be accurate.<\/p>\n<p>We apologize to Representative Pocan.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But Pocan wasn\u2019t swayed by the apology, writing Saturday on Twitter: \u201cSigh. This is not about me, this is about your workers \u2014 who you don\u2019t treat with enough respect or dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStart by acknowledging the inadequate working conditions you\u2019ve created for ALL your workers, then fix that for everyone &amp; finally, let them unionize without interference,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Workers at Amazon\u2019s huge processing facility in Bessemer, Alabama, have voted on whether to unionize, which Amazon has fiercely opposed.
