On Wednesday, multiple unnamed sources <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxla.com\/news\/gascon-to-downsize-rename-la-county-da-hardcore-gangs-unit-sources-confirm\">told<\/a> Melugin that upper management had called a meeting to inform prosecutors that the unit would be cut back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were told that George Gasc\u00f3n wants to, quote, \u2018reimagine\u2019 the unit, make it more community-based, that they want to change the name because Gasc\u00f3n and the administration don\u2019t like the name,\u201d Melugin <a href=\"https:\/\/kfiam640.iheart.com\/featured\/john-and-ken\/content\/2021-04-02-george-gascon-to-cut-hardcore-gangs-unit\/\">told<\/a> KFI\u2019s John and Ken Show. \u201cAn hour before this meeting, the Major Narcotics Unit had a similar meeting, and they were told that half of their unit is going to be wiped out as well. And those transfer lists have already started going out. Gasc\u00f3n has repeatedly said that he views himself as part of a progressive movement that has prioritized implementing sweeping criminal justice reforms across the nation.<\/p>\n<p>A prosecutor in Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s office speaking on the condition of anonymity reportedly told FOX 11, \u201cthe gang unit was pretty much decimated.\u201d The source said management acknowledged the change would create a \u201cnightmare\u201d as the Hardcore Gang Unit has about 700 active cases.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxla.com\/news\/gascon-to-downsize-rename-la-county-da-hardcore-gangs-unit-sources-confirm\">More from FOX 11<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"11\">\n<p><em>The Hardcore Gangs unit is one of the oldest units in the office and it\u2019s responsible for prosecuting the most heinous and complex gang-related crimes in the country. In Melugin\u2019s report from two weeks ago, prosecutors had said they feel they\u2019ve already been hamstrung by&nbsp;Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s decision to ban them from using gang and gun enhancements. With that in mind, prosecutors told Melugin earlier in the month that disbanding the Hardcore Gangs unit will be a disaster waiting to happen, given the surge in violent crimes across Los Angeles.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Melugin recently spoke to an unnamed prosecutor who claimed, \u201cWe can already hear in jail calls and interviews with officers on the street telling us that the gang members are laughing at them.\u201d The source reportedly said Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s policy changes had emboldened gang members and \u201cundermined the credibility of law enforcement in its entirety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>L.A. County Sheriff Alex Villanueva, who supports an effort to recall Gasc\u00f3n from office, blasted his decision to downsize the Hardcore Gang Unit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile gang members are busy driving up LA County\u2019s homicide rate, LA DA @GeorgeGascon is now dismantling the Hardcore Gang Unit that works in collaboration with local law enforcement,\u201d Sheriff Villanueva <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LACoSheriff\/status\/1377451830121144321\">tweeted<\/a>. \u201cThis can only serve to add gasoline to a raging fire of gang violence that threatens the safety of all.
