During a press conference Thursday, the president of the Houston Forensic Science Center, Dr. Peter Stout, said they have seen an 87 percent increase in fentanyl cases throughout the city.<\/p>\n<p>Stout added that for the first time, they saw a pill sold as ecstasy that contained both methamphetamine and fentanyl in the same tablet. He said they are often disguised as colorful pills, adding that there\u2019s no way for people to know what\u2019s inside just by looking at them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are children\u2019s vitamins and aspirin, but ecstasy tablets\u2026there is no earthly way that somebody knows what they just stuck in their mouth with this,\u201d Dr. Stout explained. \u201cCould be fentanyl, could be methamphetamine, could be anything than what they thought\u2026we see this all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Houston DEA Special Agent Erik Smith highlighted the severity of the influx while drawing attention to just how lethal fentanyl can be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Houston division in Drug Enforcement Administration, in fiscal year 2019, seized about 53 kilograms of fentanyl,\u201d he noted. \u201cIn fiscal year 2020 that number increased 600 percent to 323 kilograms\u2026at a fatal dosage unit, that\u2019s enough to kill half the population of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/DEA?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#DEA<\/a> Houston Associate Special Agent in Charge Erik Smith speaking this morning \u2066<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HoustonForensic?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@HoustonForensic<\/a>\u2069 Science Center on the dangers of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/fentanyl?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#fentanyl<\/a> laced drugs <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/awareness?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#awareness<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/drugfree?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#drugfree<\/a>  <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/DEAHoustonDiv?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#DEAHoustonDiv<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DKipXFsb3O\">pic.twitter.com\/DKipXFsb3O<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 DEAHouston (@DEAHOUSTONDiv) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DEAHOUSTONDiv\/status\/1377641544841371649?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 1, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Mexican government reported that in 2020 they seized more than 1.3 tons of the drug. Smith urged lawmakers to renew a law, which would allow border agents to seize the substance at ports of entry.
