It\u2019s only an opinion. I\u2019m allowed to have opinions now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) responded to these remarks, saying, \u201cThis was never a conspiracy theory. The Chinese Communist Party needs to be held accountable,\u201d adding that \u201call of the circumstantial evidence points to the Wuhan labs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"10.245098039216\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We may never have direct, conclusive evidence because of the Chinese Communist Party&#8217;s coverup. <\/p>\n<p>But all of the circumstantial evidence points to the Wuhan labs.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tom Cotton (@TomCottonAR) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TomCottonAR\/status\/1375462222370066438?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 26, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>However, for the entirety of the COVID-19 pandemic under the Trump administration, the notion that the virus originated in a Chinese lab <\/span><i><span>was<\/span><\/i><span> widely rejected as a conspiracy theory. Here\u2019s how this now-valid theory was treated when Donald Trump was one of the figures suggesting it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2020\/05\/01\/was-new-coronavirus-accidentally-released-wuhan-lab-its-doubtful\/\"><b>The Washington Post<\/b><\/a><b> \u2014 \u201cWas the new coronavirus accidentally released from a Wuhan lab? It\u2019s doubtful.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Citing Donald Trump\u2019s comments from April 15, 2020, that \u201cI will tell you, more and more, we\u2019re hearing the story [that the new coronavirus emerged from a Wuhan lab],\u201d The Washington Post fact-check \u201cbottom line\u201d stated:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"14\">\n<p><i><span>The balance of the scientific evidence strongly supports the conclusion that the new coronavirus emerged from nature \u2014 be it the Wuhan market or somewhere else. Too many unexpected coincidences would have had to take place for it to have escaped from a lab. But the Chinese government has not been willing or able to provide information that would clarify lingering questions about any possible role played by either Wuhan lab.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>That\u2019s why intelligence agencies are still exploring that possibility, no matter how remote it may be. And even then, it\u2019s unclear when or if we will ever know the origin story of this new virus that is causing death and economic turmoil around the globe.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2020\/sep\/16\/li-meng-yan\/tucker-carlson-guest-airs-debunked-conspiracy-theo\/\"><b>Politifact<\/b><\/a><b> \u2014 \u201cThis virus, COVID-19 SARS-CoV-2 virus, actually is not from nature. It is a man-made virus created in the lab.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Politifact rated this statement on \u201cTucker Carlson Tonight\u201d by Li-Meng Yan as \u201cPants On Fire!\u201d with the sub-heading \u201cTucker Carlson guest airs debunked conspiracy theory that COVID-19 was created in a lab.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>Scientists say the coronavirus emerged from bats and later jumped to humans,\u201d the fact-check states. \u201cThe genetic structure of the novel coronavirus rules out laboratory manipulation. Public health authorities have repeatedly said the coronavirus was not derived from a lab.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/one-in-four-americans-believe-coronavirus-engineered-wuhan-lab-2020-10\"><b>Business Insider<\/b><\/a><b> \u2014 \u201c23% of Americans think the coronavirus was created in a Chinese lab, a survey suggests. Here\u2019s why that conspiracy theory is bogus.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAbout one in four Americans and Britons think the idea that the virus was engineered in a Wuhan laboratory is a \u201creliable\u201d claim, according to <\/span><span>a recent study<\/span><span>, despite abundant scientific evidence to the contrary,\u201d Business Insider reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAnother theory suggests that the new coronavirus had animal origins, but that a sample of it collected for prior study accidentally leaked from a lab. Believers of this conspiracy generally point to the Wuhan Institute of Virology as the source of the leak, since scientists there study infectious diseases, including coronaviruses,\u201d the report added. \u201cThere\u2019s no evidence, however, that a lab leak occurred there or anywhere else.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/peteraldhous\/wuhan-lab-coronavirus-trump\"><b>Buzzfeed News<\/b><\/a><b> \u2014 \u201cThis Is What We Know About The Wuhan Lab That Trump Blames For COVID-19\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Wuhan Institute of Virology previously conducted controversial experiments to test what could make coronaviruses more dangerous to humans, but scientists have ruled out that SARS-CoV-2 is a product of genetic engineering,\u201d Buzzfeed wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cDespite the questions and rumors, there\u2019s quite a bit we do know about the research that was done at the Wuhan lab and why it\u2019s unlikely to be the origin of the new coronavirus,\u201d they added later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2020\/05\/why-scientists-believe-the-wuhan-lab-coronavirus-origin-theory-is-highly-unlikely\"><b>Vanity Fair<\/b><\/a><b> \u2014 \u201c\u2018The Discussion Is Basically Over\u2019: Why Scientists Believe the Wuhan-Lab Coronavirus Origin Theory Is Highly Unlikely\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cTrump and Mike Pompeo\u2019s favorite blame-China theory makes great propaganda \u2014 but dubious science,\u201d wrote Joe Pompeo for Vanity Fair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe lab-accident scenario seems the stuff of Hollywood thrillers \u2014 and perfect as propaganda, which operates on principles similar to those of thrillers \u2014 but there are a few facts that give it a surface plausibility,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/science\/story\/2020-05-09\/was-the-coronavirus-made-in-a-wuhan-lab-heres-what-the-genetic-evidence-shows\"><b>LA Times<\/b><\/a><b> \u2014 \u201cWas the coronavirus made in a Wuhan lab? Here\u2019s what the genetic evidence shows\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cLike the virus whose origin it purports to explain, the following conjecture refuses to die: The novel coronavirus was cooked up in a Chinese lab and either escaped or was intentionally released,\u201d reported the LA Times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s a claim without the support of any publicly available evidence. It implies that tight-lipped members of a large and malign network colluded to engineer the COVID-19 pandemic or to cover up an accident that caused it. The story has all the earmarks of a conspiracy theory.
