Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) was offered $4 million to write a book about his pandemic leadership \u2013 <em>after<\/em> his disastrous nursing home policy led to the deaths of thousands of patients.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/31\/nyregion\/cuomo-book-nursing-homes.html\">reported<\/a> &nbsp;that Cuomo had his aides seek the book deal while also having them edit a report that showed he <em>wasn\u2019t<\/em> the hero of the pandemic, but actually the villain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn impending Health Department report threatened to disclose a far higher number of&nbsp;nursing home&nbsp;deaths related to the coronavirus than the Cuomo administration had previously made public. Ms. [Melissa] DeRosa and other top aides&nbsp;expressed concern&nbsp;about the higher death toll, and, after their intervention, the number \u2014 which had appeared in the second sentence of the report \u2014 was removed from the final version,\u201d the Times reported. \u201cThe revisions occurred as the governor was on the brink of a huge payoff: a book deal that ended with a high offer of more than $4 million, according to people with knowledge of the book\u2019s bidding process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Times examination found that Cuomo\u2019s book deal \u201coverlapped with the move by his most senior aides to reshape a report about nursing home deaths in a way that insulated the governor from criticism and burnished his image.\u201d It also overlapped with glowing coverage from the Times and other media outlets.<\/p>\n<p>Another of Cuomo\u2019s top aides, Stephanie Benton, was directed to ask assistants to prints portions of the manuscript\u2019s draft and bring them to the governor\u2019s mansion. On one occasion, the request came on the same day that DeRosa gathered other top advisers to discuss the Health Department draft report that could crush the governor\u2019s image.<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo\u2019s book, \u201cAmerican Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the Covid-19 Pandemic,\u201d portrayed him as a hero despite New York seeing more deaths than all but one other state (California). The Times also reported that Cuomo\u2019s use of his aides to write and edit the book may run \u201cafoul of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jcope.ny.gov\/sites\/g\/files\/oee746\/files\/documents\/2017\/09\/public-officers-law-74.pdf\">state laws<\/a>&nbsp;prohibiting use of public resources for personal gain.\u201d The staffers used their personal email accounts to discuss the book, rather than their official government accounts.<\/p>\n<p>One anonymous staffer, who feared retaliation for speaking out, told the Times she and others were asked to help type the book or transfer Cuomo\u2019s notes, which he sometimes composed by dictating into his cellphone.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Azzopardi, a senior adviser to Cuomo, told the Times that there was \u201cno connection between the [health department] report and this outside project, period,\u201d adding that, \u201cany suggestion otherwise is just wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Azzopardi also told the outlet that Cuomo\u2019s top aides \u201cvolunteered on this project\u201d using their free time, which he said was \u201cpermissible and consistent with ethical requirements\u201d of New York.<\/p>\n<p>DeRosa was heavily involved in Cuomo\u2019s book and getting the Health Department to revise its report, which essentially cleared Cuomo and his administration of any fault relating to nursing home deaths \u2013 policies which are now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-fbi-u-s-attorney-investigating-cuomo-administration-over-nursing-home-deaths\">under investigation<\/a> by the FBI.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
