Scholastic, on Monday, announced that it was pulling a popular spinoff of the \u201cCaptain Underpants\u201d novel series amid concerns the graphic novel\u2019s depiction of a \u201cKung-fu master\u201d was an example of \u201cpassive racism\u201d that was \u201charmful\u201d to Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.<\/p>\n<p>The Spongebob Squarepants episode, \u201c\u2018Kwarantined Crab,\u2019 from the show\u2019s 12th season, centers on a virus storyline,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/03\/30\/media\/controversial-spongebob-episodes\/index.html\">CNN Business reported Wednesday<\/a>.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have decided to not air it&nbsp;due to sensitivities surrounding the global, real-world pandemic,\u201d a spokesperson for Nickelodeon told the network.<\/p>\n<p>The episode has several of the main characters quarantined in a local fast-food restaurant, the Krusty Krab, over concerns that one of them harbors the \u201cClam Flu.\u201d A health inspector forces the quarantined group into a walk-in freezer, where they fight amongst themselves over who was responsible for beginning the \u201cClam Flu\u201d pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile Nickelodeon did not elaborate further on what they meant by \u201csensitivities,\u201d the Asian communities in the United States and around the world have faced escalated discrimination during the past year, and entertainment industries have been responding accordingly,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/tv\/spongebob-squarepants-episode-pulled-pandemic\/\">Entertainment Weekly noted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe removal of the \u2018Kwarantined Crab\u2019 comes during a time of increased anti-Asian violence in the United States,\u201d CNN notes. \u201cThe episode\u2019s storyline reflects&nbsp;feelings of increased isolation and hatred that many Asian communities have experienced since the Covid-19 pandemic began. The World Health Organization has urged people to avoid terms like \u2018Chinese virus\u2019 or because they can create a backlash against people of Asian descent, though former President Donald Trump repeatedly ignored such pleas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The latest examples of high-profile hate crimes against Asians do not seem to have a direct connection to President Donald Trump, though it is not clear whether either of the most recent crimes \u2014 two beatings in New York City \u2014 has a connection to feelings over the COVID-19 pandemic. A mass shooting that took place earlier in March, where the shooter targeted Asian-run massage parlors in the Atlanta, Georgia, area, appeared to be target sex workers.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cKwarantined Crab\u201d episode will no longer appear on streaming services that carry the Spongebob Squarepants series. The other episode, \u201cMid-Life Crustacean,\u201d has been off the air since 2018.
