The magnet school partners with the Fairfax County Public School district (FCPS) and often ranks as one of the best public schools in the nation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/education\/thomas-jefferson-high-lawsuit-admissions-changes\/2021\/03\/10\/339e7c3c-81c0-11eb-81db-b02f0398f49a_story.html\"><span>The Washington Post<\/span><\/a><span>, Asian-American students at TJ made up 70% of the student body in the 2019-2020 school year, though Fairfax County\u2019s Asian population is only 30%.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>FCPS <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox5dc.com\/news\/fairfax-county-public-schools-announces-new-anti-racism-curriculum\"><span>committed<\/span><\/a><span> itself to become an \u201canti-racist\u201d institution following the death of George Floyd and subsequent Black Lives Matter protests. In October, the FCPS board voted to nix TJ\u2019s rigorous admissions test and the $100 application fee in the name of equity and inclusion. The proposal \u2014 which was brought forward by Superintendent Scott Braband \u2014 sought to increase the size of the high school.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The school board also voted to approve a new \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/fairfax-county-trying-to-water-down-gifted-school-to-fight-racism-minority-parents-outraged\">holistic review<\/a>\u201d process. It requires admissions administrators to take students\u2019 socioeconomic status, disabilities, and native language into account in the admissions process.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On March 10, FCPS was hit with a second lawsuit alleging discrimination against Asian-Americans. The lawsuit was filed by the parent group \u201cCoalition for TJ\u201d and alleges that the admissions process changes were made to reduce the number of Asian students at TJ.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis action concerns FCPS\u2019 recently-implemented overhaul of the TJ admissions process, which eliminated the long-standing race-neutral standardized admissions test,\u201d the lawsuit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pacificlegal.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Coalition-for-TJ-v.-Fairfax-County-School-Board.pdf\"><span>reads<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cThe Coalition alleges that these changes were specifically intended to reduce the percentage of Asian-American students who enroll in TJ, with the ultimate goal of racially balancing the school according to the racial demographics of Fairfax County.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The lawsuit also alleges that the school violated the Equal Protection Clause, which mandates that the state treat each individual in the same manner regardless of race or circumstance.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Equal Protection Clause is a promise that government at every level will treat every American as an individual, not simply as a member of his or her racial group,\u201d the lawsuit reads. \u201cPolicies like the one implemented by FCPS stand in direct opposition to that promise.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The lawsuit also seeks a permanent injunction that would revert the school\u2019s admissions process to its original format.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In an op-ed for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2021\/03\/26\/tj-high-school-admissions-race-asian-parents-column\/6982183002\/\"><span>USA Today<\/span><\/a><span>, Asra Normani, one of the leaders of the Coalition for TJ, detailed how the new standards degrade TJ\u2019s prestige.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cMany Asian American families, like mine, have worked hard and sacrificed to prepare their children to meet the rigors of the test and the TJ curriculum,\u201d Normani <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2021\/03\/26\/tj-high-school-admissions-race-asian-parents-column\/6982183002\/\"><span>wrote<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cWe protested this weakening of standards \u2014 in part because it was clearly aimed at reducing our numbers in the student body, but just as importantly because it would degrade TJ\u2019s long tradition of advanced learning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In response to the lawsuit, a spokeswoman for FCPS told The Washington Post that it is proud to be removing the admissions test and fee to allow more \u201cculturally and ethnically diverse\u201d students to attend the magnet school.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt is in that vein that the Board fervently supported removing the historical barriers and inequities faced by students from culturally and ethnically diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, while still ensuring that TJ maintains its high academic standards,\u201d the spokeswoman said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
