Andy Beshear attended private school in first grade, though he claims to be a \u201cproud product of public education.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newspapers.com\/newspage\/437301807\/\"><span>newspaper clipping<\/span><\/a><span> from 1985, a short article entitled \u201cSecurity Rides\u201d details the security measures taken to protect the children of former Governor Martha Layne Collins and Lt. Gov. Steve Beshear, Andy Beshear\u2019s father.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe children of Gov. Martha Layne Collins and Lt. Gov. Steve Beshear are given rides by state police to school for security reasons,\u201d the article <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newspapers.com\/newspage\/437301807\/\"><span>reads<\/span><\/a><span>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The article proceeds to claim that Andy Beshear and his older brother were escorted to a private school.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cTroopers take 24-year-old Steve Collins from Frankfort to the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington for law school classes and often drive Jeff Beshear, 11, and Andy Beshear, 7, to their private school in the capital,\u201d the article reads.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>During a press conference last week, Beshear announced that he was vetoing a state-wide school choice bill, despite sending his children to private schools. When asked if it appears hypocritical to send his children to private schools while refusing to expand school choice options, Beshear claimed he was a product of Kentucky\u2019s public school system.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI am a proud product of public education. A proud graduate of Kentucky\u2019s public schools,\u201d Beshear said. \u201cMy commitment to public education runs deep.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Last week, Beshear vetoed the \u201cEducation Opportunity Account Program,\u201d (EOA) which expands school choice options to Kentucky residents. Families would be allowed to use money that is typically funneled into the public education system to pay for tuition, tutoring, uniforms, and other school-related expenses.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.legislature.ky.gov\/recorddocuments\/bill\/21RS\/hb563\/bill.pdf\"><span>bill<\/span><\/a><span> and school choice advocates claim that EOAs are a way to address educational disparities that have been exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe purpose of the EOA program is to give more flexibility and choice in education to Kentucky residents and to address disparities in education options available to students,\u201d the bill reads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Beshear claims that EOAs divert state dollars away from public schools and educators, and broadly weaken the public education system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c[This measure] represents a direct attack on public education that would significantly weaken our public education system here in Kentucky,\u201d Beshear said in a press briefing. \u201cState dollars are being diverted away from public schools and educators.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Beshear\u2019s office did not respond to multiple requests for comment.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to a report in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/education\/527623-one-sector-is-flourishing-during-the-pandemic-k-12-private-schools\"><span>The Hill<\/span><\/a><span>, private schools nationwide have seen an increase in enrollment following the coronavirus pandemic.
