CAA has advocated for affirmative action in school admissions, a policy that could sharply curtail the number of Asians at rigorous universities. Asians made up about 15% of California\u2019s population, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/education\/526642-hispanics-shock-democrats-in-deep-blue-california\"><span>36%<\/span><\/a><span> of University of California admissions in 2019.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Proposition 16, a California ballot measure that would allow affirmative action, was rejected by voters in November 2020, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/politics\/article\/Poll-California-Prop-16-15-21-22-Uber-rent-control-15675508.php\"><span>polling<\/span><\/a><span> suggesting that Asians played a strong role in the defeat. Stop AAPI Hate is billed as a joint project of CAA, the Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council (A3PCON), and San Francisco State University. Officials from both CAA and A3PCON were part of the unsuccessful campaign to pass Proposition 16.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Stop AAPI Hate appears to seek to redirect anger over a rash of violent crimes against Asians \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/chirlane-mccray-deblasio-asks-citizens-intervene-crime-after-defund-police\"><span>often committed by non-white suspects<\/span><\/a><span> \u2014 to promote causes backed by progressive black activist groups.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOur approach recognizes that in order to effectively address anti-Asian racism we must work to end all forms of structural racism leveled at Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color,\u201d its website <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stopaapihate.org\/about\/\"><span>says<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Stop AAPI Hate\u2019s media outreach is managed by Fenton, a group of progressive strategists whose <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fenton.com\/clientsissues\/\"><span>client list<\/span><\/a><span> includes the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, a George Soros-linked network of liberal billionaires called the Democracy Alliance, and the black activist group Color of Change.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Dr. Russell Jeung, a co-founder of Stop AAPI Hate and professor at San Francisco State, has stressed the importance of Asians allying with black people to eradicate racism.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe racism overall against Asian Americans is another form of white supremacy. As Asian Americans dismantle the racism directed toward us as outsiders, we\u2019re partnering with African Americans in dismantling how they\u2019re racialized and oppressed,\u201d Jeung <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/nbcblk\/how-black-people-can-be-strong-allies-asian-americans-right-n1260988\"><span>told NBC<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cIn a lot of Asian American issues, we become the wedge group to divide and conquer people of color rather than focusing on our unity and trying to dismantle the overall system.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>CAA is involved in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cpasf.org\/updates\/san-franciscos-community-coalition-for-safety-and-justice-responds-to-gun-violence-massacre-in-atlanta\/\"><span>drive<\/span><\/a><span> \u201cto create alternatives to safety and justice\u201d in San Francisco, even as many Asian communities have advocated for a greater police presence to deter violent attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In February 2020, video showed black men surrounding an elderly Asian man as he collected recyclables in that city. They taunted him, stole from him, and attempted to strike him, while someone is heard saying, \u201cI hate Asians, n*****,\u201d the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The elderly man appeared to cry.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A black man named Dwayne Grayson was arrested on suspicion of robbery, elder abuse, a hate crime charge and a probation violation. Police said he took the video. Progressive San Francisco district attorney Chesa Boudin <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/crime\/article\/SF-Bayview-attack-Second-suspect-surrenders-to-15098296.php#photo-19115389\"><span>withdrew<\/span><\/a><span> the charges, citing \u201crestorative justice.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Cynthia Choi, a CAA co-executive director and co-founder of Stop AAPI Hate, seemed to acknowledge the tension between her positions and sentiment in the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere are members of our community that believe more police presence, that will lead to safety, that there should be more bilingual cops, that there should be more drive-bys,\u201d she told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/22308407\/attacks-asian-americans-police\"><span>Vox<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cAnd the data just doesn\u2019t show that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The group was launched on March 19, 2020, just days after then-President Donald Trump was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/asian-america\/trump-tweets-about-coronavirus-using-term-chinese-virus-n1161161\"><span>criticized<\/span><\/a><span> for posting a tweet that referred to COVID-19 as \u201cthe Chinese virus.\u201d Its founders penned an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/story\/2020-04-01\/coronavirus-anti-asian-discrimination-threats\"><span>op-ed<\/span><\/a><span> in the Los Angeles Times that condemned Trump\u2019s rhetoric and \u201cRepublicans in Congress\u201d for continuing \u201cto blame China as the source of the virus, rather than focusing on how to control the spread of Covid-19.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Over the last year, crimes against Asians have become more frequent in places like New York City, where statistics show that in 2020, most of those arrested on charges of anti-Asian hate crimes were black.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Before the Atlanta shooting, the media was already pushing Stop AAPI Hate. NBC News <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/asian-america\/there-were-3-800-anti-asian-racist-incidents-mostly-against-n1261257\"><span>reported<\/span><\/a><span> that the data compiled by Stop AAPI Hate indicated the number of anti-Asian hate incidents \u201cis greater than previously reported,\u201d and one piece on the outlet\u2019s web site even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/asian-america\/anti-racism-resources-support-asian-american-pacific-islander-community-n1260467\"><span>encouraged<\/span><\/a><span> readers to donate money to the group.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After the March 16, 2021 shooting, which police have indicated was not motivated by race, the narrative went full throttle.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.1219512195122\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">There were 3,800 anti-Asian racist incidents, mostly against women, in past year. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lTAARHzuXg\">https:\/\/t.co\/lTAARHzuXg<\/a> \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NBCAsianAmerica?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@NBCAsianAmerica<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 NBC News (@NBCNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NBCNews\/status\/1372132624894980102?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 17, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>One Washington Post column citing Stop AAPI Hate was titled \u201cAsian Americans must not <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2021\/03\/20\/asian-americans-must-not-fight-white-terror-alone\/\"><span>fight white terror<\/span><\/a><span> alone.\u201d Another column in the Post stated, \u201cThe past year has given rise to a veritable epidemic of anti-Asian violence in the United States. Stop AAPI Hate, an Asian American advocacy organization, documented at least 3,795 incidents of anti-Asian bias between March 2020 and the end of last month,\u201d and \u201cresearchers have directly linked tweets by former president <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2021\/03\/24\/anti-asian-violence-linked-anti-china-sentiment-washington\/\"><span>Donald Trump<\/span><\/a><span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAsian-Americans were targeted in nearly 3,800 hate incidents in the past year,\u201d read a March 17 headline from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/17\/us\/hate-crimes-against-asian-americans-community.html\"><span>The New York Times<\/span><\/a><span>, citing the group. The Associated Press, National Public Radio, and others also ran with Stop AAPI Hate\u2019s numbers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But it is impossible to draw any conclusions from the data since it was not previously collected, is focused heavily on California, and cannot be compared to any other statistics. The vast majority of the 3,795 incidents were categorized as \u201cverbal harassment\u201d (68.1%) or \u201cshunning\u201d (20.5%). Physical assaults accounted for about 11% of the totals, according to the group\u2019s report.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Stop AAPI Hate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stopaapihate.org\/frequently-asked-questions\/\"><span>says<\/span><\/a><span> it does not collect data on the alleged perpetrators of hate incidents targeting Asians, claiming \u201cwe are not interested in racially profiling other groups or inflaming tensions between groups.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cRacial data on perpetrators doesn\u2019t help in developing policy to protect Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders,\u201d it says.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Wenyuan Wu, executive director of Californians for Equal Rights, a nonprofit that led the No on Prop 16 campaign, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocregister.com\/2021\/03\/22\/identity-politics-do-more-harm-than-good\/\"><span>likened<\/span><\/a><span> Stop AAPI Hate\u2019s strategy to putting Asians \u201cin the crossfire of a cultural war, with the ascending progressive side seeking to inject traces of white supremacy into every situation to confirm their ideology.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.8373205741627\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The fact remains that all but two of the victims in this tragic incident were Asian American women and that these were all Asian-owned businesses. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/StopAAPIHate?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#StopAAPIHate<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Stop AAPI Hate (@StopAAPIHate) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StopAAPIHate\/status\/1372260496951308290?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 17, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cIt advances the ideological agenda of the groups behind the initiative and their partner organizations,\u201d she told The Daily Wire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After George Floyd\u2019s death last year sparked nationwide protests condemning alleged racially biased policing, A3PCON published a newsletter that said the United States \u201cwas built on racist ideology.\u201d It alleged that America continues to value white people\u2019s opinions, priorities and lives more than other races and said the anti-Asian violence documented by the Stop AAPI Hate coalition showed that Asians are also negatively impacted by systemic racism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhat our communities have realized, especially those of us who believed we were protected by educational privilege and economic capital \u2013 is that we are not exempt from white supremacy,\u201d the A3PCON <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.asianpacificpolicyandplanningcouncil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Newsletter_Stopping-Contagion.pdf\"><span>newsletter<\/span><\/a><span> said. \u201cNo number of degrees or amount of money will make us white or prevent us from being told to go back to our countries of origin \u2013 and this is because America has not treated nor ever sought to prevent the spread of the contagion of racism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A3PCON called on Asian Americans to speak out \u201cagainst repeated police violence against African American men, against the lack of accountability of perpetrators of hate violence,\u201d and \u201cagainst those who foment hate\u201d directed at non-white people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis is the time to stand up to ethno-nationalist policymakers and their policies of detention and deportation, racial profiling and surveillance against immigrants and communities of color,\u201d it continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Stop Asian Hate says it does not pass on personal identifying information to law enforcement \u201cwithout expressed consent.\u201d Instead, it collects and analyzes the data \u201cto understand what is happening in our communities,\u201d which \u201csupports our advocacy efforts on local, regional, and national levels.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>California lawmakers approved $1.4 million last month to support ongoing research that addresses anti-Asian hate, including $300,000 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/caasf.org\/press-release\/stop-aapi-hate-to-receive-ca-state-funding-to-address-rising-anti-asian-hate-during-covid-19\/\"><span>allocated<\/span><\/a><span> to the Stop AAPI Hate initiative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Related: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-prop-16-and-the-anti-discrimination-law-it-repeals\"><b>Everything You Need To Know About Prop 16 And The Anti-Discrimination Law It Repeals<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
