Between 2016 and 2017 alone, the number of females seeking gender surgery in America <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plasticsurgery.org\/documents\/News\/Statistics\/2017\/body-contouring-gender-confirmation-2017.pdf\">quadrupled<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBut,\u201d Shrier continues, \u201cif you graduated high school over a decade ago, it was unlikely that you knew anyone who was transgender because \u2014 according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/dsm.psychiatryonline.org\">Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders<\/a> \u2014 the condition underlying it afflicted roughly 1 in 10,000 people or .01% of the population.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAlmost none of these cases were teenage girls,\u201d Shrier notes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/book\/10.1002\/9781118269978\">Gender Dysphoria<\/a> \u2014 the severe discomfort in one\u2019s biological sex \u2014 has been studied for nearly one hundred years,\u201d Shrier continues. \u201cIt almost always involved boys who began feeling it between the ages of 2 and 4 and were <a href=\"https:\/\/psychnews.psychiatryonline.org\/doi\/full\/10.1176\/pn.38.14.0032\">strong and persistent<\/a> in their assertions to everyone around them that they were really girls.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Shrier then notes that \u201csomething significant is happening\u201d when we \u201ca phenomenon that affects one half of a population \u2013 boys \u2014 suddenly begins affecting the other half \u2014 girls,\u201d especially when \u201cits age of onset shifts from preschool to adolescence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIn 2016, Brown University public health researcher Lisa Littman began studying the sudden spike in trans identification of teenage girls. She <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0202330\">concluded<\/a> that peer influence and social media influence had a lot to do with this trans teen phenomenon. After all, based on parent reports, none of these girls had exhibited symptoms of gender dysphoria at the age that it typically first presents: early childhood,\u201d Shrier explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Shrier then references the popular social media influences, hosted on social media platforms, who \u201cinsist that if you feel uncomfortable in your body, you\u2019re probably trans,\u201d and that \u201cmany promise that if you start a course of testosterone, all of your problems will go away.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere\u2019s every reason to believe that these girls are experiencing real psychological pain \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1054139X1930254X\">rates<\/a> of anxiety, depression and instances of self-harm are all at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/think-act-be\/201912\/why-young-people-face-major-mental-health-crisis\">record levels<\/a> for this generation. A quick fix becomes very tempting,\u201d Shrier acknowledges. \u201cSo, it doesn\u2019t take much \u2014 a YouTube video, a friend\u2019s suggestion \u2014 to get a troubled girl to buy into the fantasy that gender transition is the answer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cUnfortunately, for these girls \u2014 who do not have typical gender dysphoria \u2014 gender transition rarely offers relief. And it\u2019s a catastrophic mistake for psychologists, educators and the medical establishment to rush these teens toward \u2018a solution\u2019 that will almost certainly harm rather than heal,\u201d Shrier continues. \u201cBecause here\u2019s what\u2019s not in dispute: unnecessary medical gender transition causes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Irreversible-Damage-Transgender-Seducing-Daughters\/dp\/1684510317\">irreversible damage<\/a> \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6626312\/\">high risk of infertility<\/a>, sexual dysfunction, and the creation of a permanent medical patient.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Why Girls Become Boys | 5 Minute Video\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/F7bMJd_QAXs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>Shrier then argues that \u201cwe\u2019ve made it far too easy for kids to take this path \u2014 long before they\u2019re ready psychologically or emotionally to make such a life-altering decision,\u201d describing such a state of affairs as \u201ctragic.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cTestosterone is easily obtained by today\u2019s teens. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregon.gov\/oha\/PH\/HEALTHYPEOPLEFAMILIES\/YOUTH\/Documents\/minor-rights.pdf\">In Oregon<\/a> a 15-year-old can walk into a gender clinic \u2014 yes, there are now gender clinics all over the country \u2014 and walk out the same day with a prescription for testosterone without her parents\u2019 permission. Sixteen-year-old girls have been able to undergo double mastectomies \u2014the removal of both breasts \u2014 without even a therapist\u2019s note,\u201d Shrier says. \u201cPredictably, hasty gender transition \u2014 remember we\u2019re talking about teenagers here \u2014 is now leading to a lot of regret.&nbsp; New testimonials appear on YouTube almost every week from teens who acknowledge they made a terrible mistake and warn others not to make the same one.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Shrier then moves on to discuss how parents can protect their daughters from \u201cbeing drawn into this dangerous and growing trend.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFirst,\u201d Shrier explains, \u201climit their exposure to social media as much as you can. Several academic <a href=\"https:\/\/ifstudies.org\/blog\/5-questions-with-family-studies-dr-sarah-coyne-on-social-media-and-teen-suicide\">studies<\/a> have already linked the alarming rates of anxiety and depression to young girls\u2019 punishing experience on social media \u2014 a place that often makes them feel sad, unattractive, and alone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSecond,\u201d Shrier continues, \u201coppose the teaching of gender ideology in your kids\u2019 school. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ca.gov\/ci\/he\/cf\/documents\/hefwch3tk-3.docx\">In California<\/a>, gender identity education begins in kindergarten and proceeds through high school. The theme is that kids\u2019 gender identity is totally independent of their physical sex and something that only they can know. Schools can and should insist that every child be treated respectfully without sowing gender confusion in an entire student population.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThird,\u201d Shrier concludes, \u201cand most importantly, remember that a teenager is still just a teenager. You don\u2019t have to agree with every identity proclamation your daughter comes up with.
