Johns, executive director of the NBJC, said the law is intended to restrict voting rights of African Americans in Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGeorgia\u2019s new law restricting voting access is designed to turn back the clock on civil rights, and return Black and poor and already disenfranchised voters in Georgia to second class citizens,\u201d Johns said in a statement <a href=\"https:\/\/golfweek.usatoday.com\/2021\/03\/27\/civil-rights-pga-tour-masters-augusta-national-protest-georgia-new-voting-law\/\">provided<\/a> to&nbsp;Golfweek. \u201cThis is an unacceptable attack on our democracy and companies that operate in Georgia must speak out against this restrictive law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe PGA Tour and Masters Tournament have both made commitments to help diversify golf and address racial inequities in this country \u2014 and we expect them to not only speak out against Georgia\u2019s new racist voter suppression law \u2014 but to also take action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProfessional golf should not reward Georgia\u2019s attacks on democracy and voting rights with the millions of dollars in revenue that the tournament generates and the prestige it brings to the State,\u201d Johns said. \u201cWe all must act to protect our democracy and the right to vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The civil rights group also urged professional golfers to boycott the event if it is not moved.<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden has blasted voting laws like the one in Georgia as \u201cun-American\u201d and \u201csick,\u201d and called the new Georgia voting law \u201can atrocity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t need anything else to know that this is nothing but punitive, designed to keep people from voting,\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n<p>Republican Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, however, said the law will make elections in Georgia \u201csecure, accessible and fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not the first time the club and event have come under fire.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, a sportswriter who had already suggested that the NFL eliminate the playing of the national anthem before each game said that the Masters Tournament change its name because \u201cin the current climate, with all the sweeping changes, it\u2019s only right and just.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rob Parker wrote a Deadline piece <a href=\"https:\/\/deadspin.com\/we-ve-lived-with-the-masters-name-long-enough-1844121041\">headlined<\/a> \u201cWe\u2019ve Lived with \u2018The Masters\u2019 Name Long Enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAugusta National was built on grounds that were once a slave plantation and was the property of a slave owner. And according to a 2019 New Yorker piece about the course, it\u2019s believed that enslaved Blacks were housed on the property,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTiger Woods, other big-time golfers and corporate sponsorships should demand it. In the current climate, with all the sweeping changes, it\u2019s only right and just. Best of all, in this case, it\u2019s a simple and smooth fix. The Masters never felt good or even sounded good when you said it,\u201d Parker wrote. \u201cWhen you hear anyone say the Masters, you think of slave masters in the South. There\u2019s nothing else, nothing special. You don\u2019t think of someone mastering the game of golf.
