Children are not colorblind\u2014not only do they first notice differences in race in infancy, but they also start forming their own sense of identity at a very young age,\u201d Betancourt said. \u201c\u2018The ABCs of Racial Literacy\u2019 is designed to foster open, age-appropriate conversations among families and support them in building racial literacy. By encouraging these much-needed conversations through Coming Together, we can help children build a positive sense of identity and value the identities of others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Sesame Workshop initiative is one instance of a broader push to bring so-called \u201canti-racist\u201d training into children\u2019s education. At the beginning of March, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/arizona-education-department-tells-parents-to-talk-about-racism-with-3-month-olds\">Arizona Department of Education<\/a> announced an \u201cequity toolkit\u201d for parents to confront their three-month-olds about racism and start the conversation \u201cbefore their children can speak.\u201d As The Daily Wire reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"24\">\n<p><em>The Department of Education explicitly told parents that \u201csilence about race reinforces racism by letting children draw their own conclusions based on what they see.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The graphic shows the linear aging of a child and details how parents should talk about race and racism at each stage of their childhood. Parents are told to talk to their three-month-olds about racism because \u201cbabies look more at faces that match the race of their caregivers.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>At the age of two, the graphic claims that children use race \u201cto reason about people\u2019s behaviors\u201d and, by 30 months, they allegedly use race to choose their friends. By ages four and five, children allegedly become racially prejudiced.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>According to the graphic, by the time children reach kindergarten they can become full-blown racists. Kindergarteners allegedly \u201cshow many of the same racial attitudes that adults in our culture hold \u2014 they have already learned to associate some groups with higher status than others.\u201d Parents are encouraged to have conversations with kindergarteners to discuss how interracial friendships can improve their racial attitudes.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr. Seuss Enterprises, which controls the rights to works by Theodore Seuss Geisel, known as the popular children\u2019s author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/prices-of-dr-seuss-books-skyrocket-after-6-are-canceled\">Dr. Seuss<\/a>, canceled six of Geisel\u2019s children\u2019s books earlier this month over allegedly racist depictions of certain characters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese books portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong.
