Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg made the announcement while speaking to reporters on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s proposing a vehicle mileage tax as a way to pay for Biden\u2019s estimated $3 trillion proposal ahead of its official unveiling.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We&#8217;re facing a trillion-dollar backlog of roads, bridges, and other pieces of crumbling infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not just a challenge\u2014it&#8217;s an opportunity to create jobs and help more Americans access safe, affordable transportation, no matter where they&#8217;re from.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Secretary Pete Buttigieg (@SecretaryPete) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SecretaryPete\/status\/1375591320908095491?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 26, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A gas tax has been used to pay for the nation\u2019s highway system, but the Tax Foundation noted the funding is decreasing due to a rise in electric cars. As a result, federal spending reportedly goes far beyond revenue being brought in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI think that shows a lot of promise. If we believe in that so-called user-pays principle, the idea that part of how we pay for roads is you pay based on how much you drive,\u201d Buttigieg said. \u201c<\/span><span class=\"s1\">The gas tax used to be the obvious way to do it, it\u2019s not anymore.
