William Fulbright to delay votes on racial integration.&nbsp;<\/span><span>However, modern-day Democrats apparently forget that their Commander-in-Chief brushed shoulders with many of these Jim Crow Senators during his four decades in the upper chamber of Congress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Here are five segregationists who Biden once praised and associated with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Strom Thurmond<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Biden once delivered a glowing speech about Sen. Strom Thurmond (D-SC and R-SC), who served in the Senate for nearly five decades and staunchly supported segregation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Thurmond \u2015 who spoke for a straight 24 hours and 18 minutes against the Civil Rights Act of 1957 \u2015 currently holds the record for the longest filibuster speech by a lone senator.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>During the primary race, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/politics\/biden-praised-segregationist-strom-thurmond-as-closest-friend-who-believed-in-heterogenous-diverse-society\"><span>Washington Examiner<\/span><\/a><span> obtained unaired footage of Biden praising Thurmond in 1988 at Clemson University\u2019s Strom Thurmond Institute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI came to the United States Senate. I was a 29-year-old fellow out of the Civil Rights movement, a public defender, and it turns out one of my closest friends ends up being Strom Thurmond, a man whose background and interests, at the time I came, were considerably different than mine,\u201d said Biden.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf you had told me when I entered the United States Senate that one of the people that I\u2019d have the closest relationship within the Senate would be Strom Thurmond, I would have told you that you were crazy. And I suspect maybe Strom would have told you, you were crazy,\u201d continued Biden. \u201cI\u2019m not just saying Strom and I are close. Anyone who knows the Senate knows how seldom we agree on the controversial issues but how closely we work together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI get along with Strom Thurmond because I respect him,\u201d added Biden, \u201cbecause Strom Thurmond believes deeply in what he does, and he is a consummate legislator.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>James Eastland<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>During the race for the Democratic nomination, Biden <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/joe-biden-segregationist-senators-civility_n_5d0a352ae4b0e560b70c6f46\"><span>discussed<\/span><\/a><span> his past working relationships with Jim Crow politicians, including Sen. James Eastland (D-MS). The longtime senator <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1986\/02\/20\/obituaries\/james-o-eastland-is-dead-at-81-leading-senate-foe-of-integration.html\"><span>served<\/span><\/a><span> as chairman of the Judiciary Committee for twenty-two years and often spoke of black people as an \u201cinferior race.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Eastland once <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americancowboychronicles.com\/2015\/07\/democrat-party-legacy-of-racism.html\"><span>told<\/span><\/a><span> a crowd in Mississippi that \u201cthe Constitution of the United States was destroyed because of the Supreme Court\u2019s decision\u201d in <\/span><i><span>Brown v. Board of Education<\/span><\/i><span>, meaning that they were \u201cnot obliged to obey the decisions of any court which are plainly fraudulent sociological considerations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Biden recalled his colleague during a 2019 speech at a New York City hotel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI know the new New Left tells me that I\u2019m \u2015 this is old-fashioned,\u201d Biden remarked. \u201cWell guess what? If we can\u2019t reach a consensus in our system, what happens? It encourages and demands the abuse of power by a president. That\u2019s what it does.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After remembering that Eastland called him \u201cson\u201d rather than \u201cboy,\u201d Biden said that \u201cat least there was some civility\u201d at the time.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe got things done. We didn\u2019t agree on much of anything. We got things done. We got it finished,\u201d said Biden. \u201cBut today, you look at the other side and you\u2019re the enemy. Not the opposition, the enemy. We don\u2019t talk to each other anymore.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Other Democratic presidential contenders were not impressed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York City <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BilldeBlasio\/status\/1141371930915803136\"><span>decried<\/span><\/a><span> Biden for \u201clonging for the good old days of \u2018civility\u2019 typified by James Eastland.\u201d He noted that Eastland would not have approved of de Blasio\u2019s multiracial family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHe repeatedly demonstrates that he is out of step with the values of the modern Democratic Party,\u201d remarked the Mayor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) issued a similar <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/vice-president-joe-bidens-comments-civility-working-segregationist\/story?id=63809652\"><span>condemnation<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYou don\u2019t joke about calling black men \u2018boys.\u2019 Men like James O. Eastland used words like that, and the racist policies that accompanied them, to perpetuate white supremacy and strip black Americans of our very humanity,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cVice President Biden\u2019s relationships with proud segregationists are not the model for how we make America a safer and more inclusive place for black people, and for everyone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Herman Talmadge<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Biden has also touted his relationship with Sen. Herman Talmadge (D-GA), who served in the Senate from 1957 to 1981.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A New York Times obituary <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2002\/03\/22\/us\/herman-talmadge-georgia-senator-and-governor-dies-at-88.html\"><span>recalled<\/span><\/a><span> that Sen. Talmadge \u201cbuilt schools as governor of Georgia and then called for stopping desegregation by closing them.\u201d During his 1956 Senate campaign, Talmadge claimed that \u201cGod advocates segregation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Joining other Democratic candidates, then-Senator Kamala Harris <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/a-complicated-history-four-times-joe-biden-and-kamala-harris-have-gone-head-to-head\"><span>criticized<\/span><\/a><span> Biden for his comments about Eastland and Talmadge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>During a primary debate, Harris told her current boss that it was \u201churtful to hear you talk about the reputations of two United States senators who built their reputations and career on segregation of race in this country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>She likewise recalled Biden\u2019s opposition to integrated busing in the 1970s: \u201cYou also worked with them to oppose busing. And you know, there was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools and she was bused to school every day, and that little girl was me. So, I will tell you that on this subject, it cannot be an intellectual debate among Democrats. We have to take it seriously. We have to act swiftly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Robert Byrd<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Biden delivered a eulogy for Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV), who also served for half a century in the Senate.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Like Thurmond, Byrd employed the filibuster to oppose the Civil Rights Act of 1964 in a speech lasting over fourteen hours. Although he later <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/joe-biden-giving-eulogy-kkk-recruiter-robert-byrd-resurfaces-after-trump-doesnt-condemn-white-1535776\"><span>recanted<\/span><\/a><span> his support of the KKK, Byrd served as a recruiter for the group in his younger years.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Biden, nevertheless, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/townhall.com\/tipsheet\/katiepavlich\/2020\/07\/03\/watch-joe-biden-call-kkk-member-and-democrat-robert-byrd-a-friend-and-mentor-n2571780\"><span>called<\/span><\/a><span> Byrd a \u201cmentor,\u201d \u201cfriend,\u201d and \u201cguide\u201d at his 2010 funeral.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIn case you forgot, Joe Biden gave the eulogy at Robert Byrd\u2019s funeral,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RyanAFournier\/status\/1311704901714612224\"><span>noted<\/span><\/a><span> commentator Ryan Fournier during the 2020 presidential campaign. \u201cHe was a klansman recruiter who filibustered the 1964 Civil Rights act for 14 hours. Biden call [sic] him a \u2018mentor\u2019 and a \u2018friend.\u2019 Joe is the racist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>John Stennis<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>In a third speech, Biden praised Sen. John Stennis (D-MS) <\/span><span>\u2015<\/span><span> another firm segregationist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Stennis served for four decades in the Senate and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d1lexza0zk46za.cloudfront.net\/history\/am-docs\/southern-manifesto.pdf\"><span>signed<\/span><\/a><span> the Southern Manifesto, which advocated for widespread resistance against <\/span><i><span>Brown v. Board of Education<\/span><\/i><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Biden <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/05\/28\/politics\/kfile-joe-biden-stennis-latest\/index.html\"><span>compared<\/span><\/a><span> Stennis to a Confederate general at the Mississippi politician\u2019s 1985 birthday party.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt was said of Stonewall Jackson, \u2018He is an avalanche from an unexpected quarter, a thunderbolt from a clear sky, and yet his character and will make him a stone wall and more of a stone wall than any man I\u2019ve ever known,\u2019\u201d remarked Biden.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAnd, Mr. Chairman, when you stand on the floor of the Senate and you point that finger and you raise your voice, it\u2019s like a bolt from a clear sky, and when you speak, everyone listens,\u201d he continued. \u201cAnd as all of my colleagues have said here today, and you\u2019ll hear others say more of, he truly does stand like a stone wall, he is the rockbound integrity of the United States Congress.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>The views expressed in this piece are the author\u2019s own and do not necessarily represent those of The Daily Wire.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
