Tom Cotton (R-AR) on Thursday introduced legislation that would keep critical race theory specifically, and broad \u201canti-American\u201d ideas such as the claim that American \u201cis a fundamentally racist country\u201d out of the military.<\/p>\n<p>Christopher Rufo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/tom-cotton-senate-bill-on-critical-race-theory\">reported<\/a> at City Journal that Cotton\u2019s bill is based on the premise that the military should encourage members to \u201clove the United States,\u201d defend the \u201cfounding principles of the United States,\u201d and treat everyone as \u201chuman beings with equal dignity and protection under the law.\u201d Critical race theory, Cotton\u2019s bill insists, rejects these premises with its notions that America is irredeemably racist and stoking racial division.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur military\u2019s strength depends on the unity of our troops and the knowledge that America is a noble nation worth fighting for,\u201d Cotton said of the bill, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/tom-cotton-critical-race-theory\">according to Fox News<\/a>. \u201cCritical race theory teaches that race is a person\u2019s most important characteristic, and that America is an evil, oppresive place. That idea may be fashionable in left-wing circles and college classrooms, but it has no place in our military. Not only will such racist ideas undermine our troops\u2019&nbsp;faith in each other, they\u2019ll also erode their trust in our country\u2019s guiding principles. The United States military shouldn\u2019t be promoting such divisive, un-American ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More from Fox:<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cotton.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/CRT%20Military.pdf\">legislation<\/a>&nbsp;would specifically ban ideas like the U.S. \u201cis a fundamentally racist country\u201d or that \u201c[a]n individual, by virtue of his or her race, &nbsp;is inherently racist or oppressive, whether consciously or unconsciously.\u201d The text also provided that the bill shouldn\u2019t be construed to restrict free speech or prevent service members from accessing materials that advocate those types of theories.<\/p>\n<p>Cotton\u2019s bill faces an uphill road in the Senate, which has a 50-50 split of Republicans versus Democrats and their independent allies. In the event of a tie, the deciding vote would be cast by&nbsp;Vice President Kamala Harris. Even if it did reach President Biden\u2019s desk, it would likely be rejected as&nbsp;he has already moved to undo former President Donald Trump\u2019s ban on CRT trainings.<\/p>\n<p>Supporters of CRT say it works to combat systemic racism, which they say is prevalent in all of America\u2019s institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Rufo wrote that Cotton\u2019s bill \u201cshould be uncontroversial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerica\u2019s public institutions, especially the military, should not promote the principles of race essentialism, collective guilt, and racial segregation, which are anathema to American ideals. That this legislation is even necessary is a sign of how pervasive these ideas have become, even in ostensibly apolitical environments like the military,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Further, Rufo offered questions that should be asked of \u201cintellectual and political leaders on the Left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Do they] believe that the United States is a fundamentally racist country? Do they believe that individuals should be judged according to their race, rather than their individual actions?
