Vaccine-induced immune responses were significantly greater than the response to natural infection. Immune transfer to neonates occurred via placenta and breastmilk.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr. Andrea Edlow is a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and a co-author in the study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt does seem like great news,\u201d Edlow told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/pregnant-women-show-strong-immune-response-covid-vaccine-study-finds-n1262076#anchor-IstheCovid19vaccinesafe\">NBC\u2019s \u201cTODAY\u201d show<\/a>. \u201cThis study is one piece of the puzzle that\u2019s essential to try to give pregnant and lactating women evidence-based counseling around the vaccine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Iffath Hoskins is an OB-GYN at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York and president-elect of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists who said that the findings are \u201cvery much reassuring.\u201d She noted that the immune system of a pregnant woman is subdued so that her body doesn\u2019t reject a fetus, so people were unsure about how well a vaccine would work for a pregnant woman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat this study is showing us is that the mother does mount a robust response,\u201d said Hoskins, although she was not involved in the most recent research. \u201cHer body does wake up \u2026 making antibodies to the prod that just happened, which is the coronavirus vaccine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Edlow added that the study was not done in order to get answers on how safe the vaccine is overall.<\/p>\n<p>The study was designed with \u201c131 reproductive-age vaccine recipients (84 pregnant, 31 lactating, and 16 non-pregnant)\u201d at two different academic medical centers. The research showed that pregnant and lactating women \u201celicited comparable vaccine-induced humoral immune responses\u201d to non-pregnant persons. It also found that pregnant and lactating women \u201cgenerated higher antibody titers than those observed following SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"recommended-intersection-ref\" readability=\"21.697594501718\">\n<p>While there is not a lot of information regarding long-term effects of the COVID-19 vaccines and how they affect the general public, or pregnant people specifically, the experts told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/pregnant-women-show-strong-immune-response-covid-vaccine-study-finds-n1262076#anchor-IstheCovid19vaccinesafe\">NBC News<\/a> that COVID-19 is a known risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a whole big bucket of \u2018We don\u2019t know,\u2019\u201d Hoskins said. \u201cIn my personal opinion, there\u2019s a bigger bucket of \u2018We do know that Covid sucks and it\u2019s really bad for everybody, including a pregnant woman.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can certainly tell them with complete surety that getting Covid in pregnancy is potentially very dangerous,\u201d Edlow said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/recommendations\/pregnancy.html\">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> states that \u201cpregnant people are at an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 when compared to non-pregnant people \u2026 Additionally, pregnant people with COVID-19 might be at increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as preterm birth, compared with pregnant women without COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There have not yet been long-term widespread studies on the safety of pregnant women receiving COVID-19 vaccines. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/recommendations\/pregnancy.html\">CDC<\/a> notes that \u201cthere are currently limited data on the safety of COVID-19 vaccines in pregnant people,\u201d and&nbsp;explains, \u201cClinical trials that look at the safety and how well the COVID-19 vaccines work in pregnant people are underway or planned. Vaccine manufacturers are also monitoring data from people in the clinical trials who received vaccine and became pregnant.
