Vance <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JDVance\/status\/2118004988433641835\">admitted<\/a> Wednesday on X, explaining the Republicans\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theamericanconservative.com\/dems-score-stunning-midterm-wins\/\">disastrous midterm election loss<\/a> the day before. He <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ggreenwald\/status\/2118011278786752649\">listed<\/a> the top four things the GOP could do, according to a pollster with whom he spoke, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/desantis-seeks-redemption-after-ill-fated-white-house-campaign\/\" title=\"DeSantis aims for redemption post-failed White House bid\">win back voters<\/a> who had defected to the Democrats. These were:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1) End the war<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2) Focus on cost of living\/inflation<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3) Put America First<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">4) Change our relationship to Israel<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepThomasMassie\/status\/2118016410056274312\">replied<\/a> to Vance\u2019s post, \u201cThanks for acknowledging these things. Better late than never.\u201d Massie included an image of a red, MAGA-style hat. Instead of \u201cMake America Great Again,\u201d it said \u201cMassie Was Right About Everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>                         <!-- \/22404337467,3946880\/theamericanconservative-Leaderboard-Top -->                         <\/p>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1742316429780-0' style='min-width: 300px; min-height: 50px; max-width: 100%; '>                         <\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ll send you the hat,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Massie had a point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDonald Trump will put Americans first by securing our liberties at home and preventing needless wars abroad,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MassieforKY\/status\/1849860030654448055\">declared<\/a> Massie in his endorsement of President Donald Trump in October 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, Massie\u2019s praise for Trump expressed the most basic hope of many in the original MAGA movement, and certainly of its ideological core.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After his inauguration, Trump\u2019s early promises of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/blog\/doge-produced-largest-peacetime-workforce-cut-record-spending-kept-rising-0\">radical DOGE<\/a> spending cuts and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theamericanconservative.com\/trumps-clean-break-with-the-interventionists\/\">break from<\/a> interventionist foreign policy withered more quickly and completely than even his political adversaries had expected, and by March 2026, the administration had launched a war with Iran that seemed to serve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theamericanconservative.com\/the-israel-lobbys-changing-fortunes\/\">Israel\u2019s interests<\/a>, first. That war cost Americans at home, at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/cars\/news\/2026\/11\/04\/trump-iran-war-gas-prices-relief\/92614462007\/\">the gas pump<\/a> and beyond. So did <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us-debt-crosses-40-trillion-threshold-after-doubling-under-trump-biden-2026-08-19\/\">massive<\/a> federal spending. So did the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/blog\/high-cost-war-ukraine-aid-could-top-240-billion\">other wars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Massie resisted all of this. He has remained a fiscal hawk throughout the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/2310707\/corrupt-coronavirus-bailout-results-prove-thomas-massie-was-right-all-along\/\">entire Trump era<\/a>, which has <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/489825-trump-blasts-conservative-lawmaker-over-opposition-to-relief-package\/\">enraged Trump<\/a> in both terms. And he has been a stalwart \u201cAmerica First\u201d Republican, one who is not afraid to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/amconmag\/status\/2055371062850809870\">challenge Israeli influence<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/prem_thakker\/status\/2059834445973086531\">question policy<\/a> (which also irked the president). Massie <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/economy\/policy\/articles\/thomas-massie-says-trumps-big-180105761.html\">understood<\/a> that financial and foreign policy restraint were related, something many Americans are now <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/10\/17\/iran-war-cost-us-household-2000-energy-prices-interest-rates-military-spending\/\">experiencing firsthand<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Kentucky congressman never abandoned the old MAGA message from his original Trump endorsement. He refused. For that reason, Trump teamed with <a href=\"https:\/\/responsiblestatecraft.org\/thomas-massie-election\/\">pro-Israel billionaires<\/a> to defeat Massie in his primary this May\u2014the <a href=\"https:\/\/linknky.com\/elections\/2026\/05\/18\/massie-gallrein-gop-primary-becomes-most-expensive-in-u-s-history\/\">most expensive<\/a> House primary in U.S. history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week Republicans suffered one of the most humiliating defeats in modern American political history. And it was a loss that differed in important respects from prior reversals. \u201cPast midterm blue waves largely involved angry Democrats and independents beating up on jittery swing-seat Republicans who weren&#8217;t totally comfortable with what their president was doing, with a few genuine upsets sprinkled in,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jimantle\/status\/2118145425328783838\">observed<\/a> Jim Antle of the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cThis one hit the GOP\u2019s center of gravity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/6193617-desantis-iran-war-gop-midterms\/\">Indeed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Massie tried to warn his party. After the off-year 2025 elections in which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/11\/05\/nx-s1-5598418\/2025-election-prop-50-zohran-mamdani-nyc-virginia-new-jersey\">Democrats did exceptionally well<\/a>, he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepThomasMassie\/status\/2118024411433374122\">told<\/a> Republicans what they might need to do to survive the 2026 midterms. \u201cTo avoid a repeat of last night\u2019s shellacking in the 2026 midterms,\u201d Massie urged, \u201cRepublicans should: quit covering for pedophiles; put America before Israel; put farmers before corporations; quit funding wars abroad; reduce spending to control inflation; quit attacking independent voices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take out Massie\u2019s efforts for more transparency on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepThomasMassie\/status\/2103976784408821937\">the Epstein Files<\/a>, also a part of <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7302995\/donald-trump-jeffrey-epstein-jd-vance\/\">original MAGA<\/a>, and this sounds like Vance\u2019s midterm postmortem list. But judging by the midterm results, the voters believe it\u2019s due to Trump\u2019s.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On X, Vice President J.D. In this cycle, several Democrats embraced an \u201cAmerica First\u201d message that echoed Trump from two years earlier-and more closely mirrored Massie than the current MAGA line. Massie later warned that the party had shot the messenger and doubled down on stupidity, a blow he said Trump\u2019s faction delivered by attacking him.
