Chuck Grassley, 93, says he will not resign early and will serve the full term he won in 2022.By staying,he risks allowing Iowa’s incoming Democratic governor to appoint his successor. Your summary is essentially right. Quick points to make the mechanics clear:

– Grassley won a six‑year term in 2022 that runs through January 3, 2029.

– If a U.S. Senate seat becomes vacant mid‑term, the 17th Amendment lets state law determine how the vacancy is filled. Under Iowa law the governor can appoint an interim senator who serves until the next scheduled election (or a special election, depending on timing and state rules).

– Iowa will elect a governor in November 2026; that governor takes office in January 2027. If a Democrat wins that race, they would be the incoming governor beginning in 2027.

– Therefore, if Grassley were to resign or die after the new governor (a Democrat, if that happens) is sworn in, that governor would have the power to appoint his interim successor. By choosing to remain in office rather than resigning earlier while a Republican governor could appoint a replacement, Grassley increases the chance that a future Democratic governor – not the current republican governor – would make any appointment needed.

If you want, I can cite the specific Iowa statutes that govern vacancies or lay out a precise timeline showing which governor would appoint a successor depending on different resignation dates.

Iowa Republican Sen.
