Those statehouses and executive offices matter because they shape everything from election administration too education policy.

In Arizona,Democrats appear to have swept the top statewide posts and are poised to take both legislative chambers, which would give them full control of the state for the first time in six decades. similar flips happened in Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, where Democrats won gubernatorial races and gained legislative control; before the election, Republicans held key posts in those states.

New Hampshire and North Carolina showed comparable shifts. Although Republican Kelly Ayotte won reelection in New Hampshire, Democrats are projected to capture both the state House and Senate. In North Carolina, Democrats flipped the state House while Republicans likely held a narrow edge in the Senate (the governor’s office was not on the ballot there this year).

Democratic gains continued in some red states as well. In Georgia, Democrats took nearly all statewide offices, though the state House result remained in flux and Republicans were expected to keep the Senate. In Iowa, Democrat Rob Sand won the governor’s race and another Democrat looked set to unseat the Republican attorney general, even as Republicans were expected to keep control of the legislature.

Close contests also unfolded in Kansas, where Democrat Cindy Holscher and Democrat Chris Mann led their statewide rivals by slim margins wiht most ballots counted, while Republicans were projected to hold legislative majorities. In Ohio, Democrat Amy Acton beat republican Vivek Ramaswamy for governor, and the attorney general race was narrowly favoring Democrat John Kulewicz; Republicans there were still expected to keep the legislature.

Perhaps the biggest blow to the GOP came in Texas, where Democrats captured the governor’s office, lieutenant governor, attorney general, and won all four Texas Supreme Court races-shifting the court’s conservative dominance. Legislative control will be split, with Democrats leading the House and Republicans the Senate.

the midterms reshaped control of many state governments, amplifying democratic gains beyond the federal-level losses Republicans suffered.

Image CreditLarry D. But unfortunately for the GOP, those losses are only the tip of the political iceberg.

In “purple” and “red” states across the country, Republicans lost significant races for statewide executive offices and control of several state legislatures. As The Federalist previously observed, these state governments are critical in determining the overall governance of a state, including its election administration, education policy, and so much more.

In Arizona, Democrats are slated to sweep the races for governor, secretary of state, attorney general, and several others. They’re also on the cusp of taking control of the state House and Senate, which would give them trifecta control of the Grand Canyon State for the first time in 60 years.

A similar outcome can be seen in other battleground states like Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, where Democrats won the races for governor and assumed control of the state legislatures. Heading into Tuesday, Republicans controlled the Michigan House, the Nevada governor’s seat, the Pennsylvania Senate, and both chambers of the Wisconsin General Assembly.

New Hampshire and North Carolina followed similar trends.

While Republican Gov. Kelly Ayotte won reelection in New Hampshire, Democrats are projected to break the GOP’s trifecta by taking control of the state House and Senate. In North Carolina, Democrats flipped the state House, while Republicans appear to have salvaged a small majority in the state Senate. Much like Iowa, Republicans are projected to hold their majorities in the legislature.

A similar situation came to fruition in Ohio, where Democrat Amy Acton defeated Republican Vivek Ramaswamy in the governor’s race.
