When Democrats took control of Congress Tuesday night, many of their immediate public reactions focused on pursuing legal action against political opponents.<\/p>\n<p>Exit polling showed the economy was the top issue for many voters &#8211; with large majorities especially worried about food prices and gasoline &#8211; a finding echoed by other surveys that ranked the economy as very critically important to voters. Yet within hours of their wins, several Democratic lawmakers and progressive commentators were publicly celebrating plans to issue subpoenas and otherwise use the courts and investigations against Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>Members of Congress posted messages promising subpoenas and telling opponents to \u201clawyer up,\u201d while other figures joked about the volume of subpoenas they expected to issue or warned of legal consequences. Some commentators went further, exhorting supporters to pursue criminal charges.<\/p>\n<p>the article argues this focus on \u201clawfare\u201d is inconsistent with Democrats\u2019 campaign emphasis on affordability. Democrats won control of Congress Tuesday night and immediately told Republicans to lawyer up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thirty-nine percent of voters listed the economy as their top issue, according to an NBC News exit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2026-election\/exit-poll-trump-midterms-voters-economy-disapproval-rcna607045\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">poll<\/a>. That same poll found that 88 percent of voters with financial concerns were concerned about food and groceries, while 87 percent said gas and diesel fuel was cause for concern. That tracks with an October <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/chart\/republican-and-democratic-voters-rate-economy-as-top-voting-issue-in-midterms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pew Research poll<\/a> which found 84 percent of registered voters considered the economy \u201cvery important\u201d to their vote.<\/p>\n<div id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-616378939\" class=\"d-flex justify-content-center fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 fdrlst__b89e9-entity-placement\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within hours of winning massive victories in the House and Senate, Democrats were already advertising what they <em>really<\/em> planned to deliver in January: lawfare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThank you, Mr. President. Our thank you will come in January \u2014 with subpoenas,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepYassAnsari\/status\/2117837319294324972?a=ubcZEpwVvLWEQAOMY_Y&#038;s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rep. Yassamin Ansari<\/a>, D-Ariz., posted on X:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/repdeliaramirez\/status\/2117823240815215033?a=L2SiOTQpLVZngMsH3wg&#038;s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rep. Delia C. Ramirez<\/a>, D-Ill., (the child of illegal aliens) had a similar message: \u201cNoem, Markwayne, Miller, Homan, Bovino, what\u2019s up? Clear your schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepRobertGarcia\/status\/2117818643342041235?a=u22kiNxtrZv9xSLMWtU&#038;s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rep. Robert Garcia<\/a>, D-Calif., warned Republicans to \u201cLAWYER UP,\u201d an identical post was made by host of The Bulwark Podcast <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Timodc\/status\/2117796126988644353?a=Tg1meyzM-t00BUup_gM&#038;s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tim Miller<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., simply posted \u201cSubpoenas\u201d while Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., posted \u201cThey are going to need to plant new forests for all of the subpoenas we\u2019ll be printing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Communist streamer <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hasanthehun\/status\/2117802292904943947?a=m1PZAuft7vr1auYQpYs&#038;s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hasan Piker<\/a> was a bit more explicit in leftists\u2019 goals: \u201cWE\u2019RE GONNA PUT YOUR ASS IN JAIL EVERYONE GET MORE WOKE RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a party that ran on affordability, it\u2019s curious that their near first instinct after their massive victory was to post about lawfare \u2014 unless of course they never actually cared about affordability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take for example that Democrats simultaneously campaigned on affordability while also running on abolishing ICE and returning to the open borders days of Joe Biden \u2014 despite the fact that illegal immigration has cost the American people hundreds of billions of dollars, according to a FAIR <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairus.org\/issue\/publications-resources\/fiscal-burden-illegal-immigration-united-states-taxpayers-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">analysis<\/a> from 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the same breath that Democrats spoke about affordability on the campaign trail they simultaneously talked about Medicare for All \u2014 a policy proposal that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crfb.org\/papers\/choices-financing-medicare-all?ref=tippinsights.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">could cost<\/a> trillions <em>each year.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats also failed to explain how they\u2019d lower gas prices. Incoming California Gov. Xavier Becerra <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcra.com\/article\/xavier-becerra-california-wealth-tax-plans\/74277677\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> in October he would be open to a mileage tax and that \u201ceverything should be on the table,\u201d which is a far cry from lowering gas prices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats asked voters to put them in charge to bring down the cost of living, yet within hours they were promising to run up their political opponents\u2019 legal bills.
