He raised an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/prosecutor-who-tried-to-jail-loudoun-dad-wiped-out-at-the-ballot-box\/\" title=\"Prosecutor Who Tried To Jail Loudoun Dad Wiped Out At The Ballot Box\">unusually large sum<\/a> for a Texas Senate contest-reports say his campaign brought in roughly $160 million-and avoided the same leftward positioning that defined Beto O\u2019Rourke\u2019s 2018 bid. Whereas O\u2019Rourke embraced more progressive proposals and national-profile positions, Talarico ran a more centrist, pragmatic campaign focused on winning broader support.<\/p>\n<p>During the campaign he removed earlier language from his website that had expressed strong support for trans youth and \u201cbold, progressive ideas,\u201d and emphasized backing for Texas\u2019s oil and gas industry. He framed himself as opposed too sex-change procedures for minors on the campaign trail.Though, his <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >legislative record includes sponsoring enterprising climate-related proposals<\/a> and opposing a bill that would have banned such surgeries for minors, creating a contrast between his past actions and his campaign messaging.<\/p>\n<p>Talarico has also tried to walk back remarks he once made about religion and gender. In that race, Beto O&#8217;Rourke raised more than $80 million and became a national media darling while running against Ted Cruz. O&#8217;Rourke, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/08\/17\/639353916\/to-win-texas-beto-orourke-is-running-to-the-left\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">embraced left-wing positions<\/a> like an assault weapons ban in a bid to turn out Democratic voters rather than appeal to independents.<\/p>\n<p>Talarico matched O&#8217;Rourke&#8217;s fundraising prowess\u2014his campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/thetexan.news\/elections\/2026\/talarico-outraises-paxton-4-to-1-across-2026-u-s-senate-campaign\/article_d0ca58d2-50a1-45ec-b733-be9bdde81d4c.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raised at least $160 million<\/a>\u2014but took a different approach to strategy.        <\/p>\n<p>He presented himself as a man of the cloth willing to moderate on issues, particularly those central to Texas&#8217;s economy. Early on in his campaign, Talarico scrubbed his website of statements supporting &#8220;trans kids&#8221; and &#8220;bold, progressive ideas,&#8221; the <em>Washington Free Beacon<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/texass-talarico-scrubbed-website-of-statements-supporting-trans-kids-and-bold-progressive-ideas-ahead-of-senate-run\/\">reported<\/a>. He went on to present himself as a supporter of Texas&#8217;s oil and gas industry and an opponent of sex-change surgeries for minors, though as a state lawmaker, Talarico <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/texas-democratic-senate-hopeful-james-talarico-sought-to-create-new-generation-of-climate-activists-by-mandating-climate-change-lessons-in-texas-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introduced<\/a> &#8220;Green New Deal&#8221;-style legislation calling for sweeping greenhouse gas reductions and <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/texass-talarico-scrubbed-website-of-statements-supporting-trans-kids-and-bold-progressive-ideas-ahead-of-senate-run\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voted against a bill banning<\/a> those surgeries.<\/p>\n<p>Talarico also backed away from some of his craziest statements, declaring that &#8220;God is non-binary&#8221; and that there are six genders. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HsgLJk-HpEo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told CBS News<\/a> that the &#8220;cringey&#8221; statements &#8220;missed the mark&#8221; and suggested he had moderated in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well, you know, I think I was being intentionally provocative with that statement, but what it means is that God can&#8217;t be defined by human categories,&#8221; Talarico said about his &#8220;God is non-binary&#8221; remark. &#8220;What I meant is that there are two sexes, and then there&#8217;s a small percentage of people with genetic abnormalities,&#8221; he said of his six genders claim.<\/p>\n<p>Talarico is unmarried, but he may still need extra space when picking out a place to live in Washington, D.C.
