Haley Stevens, from a planned \u201cunity\u201d appearance after she said she expected him to denounce an antisemitic advertisement tied to his campaign &#8211; a denunciation that did not occur.<\/p>\n<p>Stevens had announced she would attend a unifying event at a Black church in Detroit on Sunday, at the invitation of Rep. Jim Clyburn, saying she anticipated El-Sayed would condemn the ad. Instead, El-Sayed issued a statement criticizing Stevens and AIPAC, noting his campaign overcame massive outside spending backing Stevens. Later Friday night, he reportedly disinvited Stevens; she said she would not comment further until after Tuesday\u2019s election.<\/p>\n<p>That split could hurt El-Sayed with Stevens\u2019s primary supporters in Detroit, where Stevens won a majority of Wayne County\u2019s primary vote. Some Black voters in the city have voiced reservations about El-Sayed\u2019s campaign, and he narrowly beat Stevens in the primary by under a point.<\/p>\n<p>The disputed ad,produced by Cenk Uygur (cofounder of The Young Turks and uncle of El-Sayed surrogate Hasan Piker),shows a couple in a grocery store blaming rising egg prices on Israel and Jews. Jewish organizations, including the Anti-Defamation League, condemned the spot; Stevens called it wrong and unhelpful to Democrats. rather than explicitly reject the ad\u2019s message, El-Sayed\u2019s team said it had not produced the ad.<\/p>\n<p>Stevens\u2019s comment that a condemnation was \u201cexpected\u201d followed talks between the two campaigns mediated by Clyburn, but signs the truce would not hold emerged quickly. Stevens\u2019s fianc\u00e9 &#8211; a Jewish Democrat and attorney who said he plans to vote for El-Sayed\u2019s Republican opponent &#8211; told TMZ he didn\u2019t expect Stevens to continue backing El-Sayed.<\/p>\n<p>El-Sayed has also been criticized for associating with several controversial figures. He repeatedly invited Hasan Piker, who has made inflammatory statements including that \u201cAmerica deserved 9\/11,\u201d to campaign events during the primary; El-Sayed has since tried to distance himself, calling Piker a \u201cstreamer in California.\u201d Piker later compared the heavily Jewish Detroit suburb of West Bloomfield to a \u201cKKK neighborhood\u201d in a livestream rant.El-sayed called those remarks inappropriate but did not directly rebuke Piker.<\/p>\n<p>El-Sayed also appeared with Marcus Muhammad, the mayor of Benton Harbor and a Nation of Islam \u201cstudent minister\u201d who has promoted antisemitic views and the Nation\u2019s conspiratorial book about Jewish involvement in the slave trade. Critics say such associations have compounded concerns about El-Sayed\u2019s outreach to Jewish voters.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><h2>Stevens said her attendance was contingent on an \u2018expected\u2019 condemnation that never came<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<figure> \t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Left-wing Michigan Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed disinvited his primary opponent, Michigan congresswoman Haley Stevens, from a planned &#8220;unity&#8221; event after he refused to condemn an antisemitic ad produced on his behalf that blames the rising cost of groceries on Jews and Israel.<\/p>\n<p>The remarkable turn of events came after Stevens <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HaleyforMI\/status\/2116161977256980989\">said<\/a> on Friday that El-Sayed\u2019s condemnation was &#8220;expected&#8221; and that, at the invitation of her mentor, Rep. Jim Clyburn (D., S.C.), she would attend a &#8220;unifying&#8221; event at a black church in Detroit on Sunday with El-Sayed and Clyburn.<\/p>\n<p>El-Sayed responded by <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/abdulelsayed\/status\/2116292933133668398?a=3Uym_3wjHBytCrA2LKk&#038;s=46\">releasing a statement<\/a> criticizing Stevens and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, which backed Stevens in the primary.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our campaign has always been focused on addressing the most critical challenges Michiganders are facing,&#8221; El-Sayed said. &#8220;That focus is why our people-powered campaign defeated a historic $70M in outside spending from big corporations and AIPAC on behalf of Congresswoman Stevens.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So while Congresswoman Stevens seems intent on reiterating a primary that ended three months ago, let\u2019s all focus on the task at hand,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Hours later, on Friday night, El-Sayed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/livecoverage\/midterm-election-news-2026\/card\/in-sign-of-democratic-division-el-sayed-disinvites-former-rival-stevens-wppXtp0XpGfJ3NmTzVTe\">reportedly disinvited<\/a> Stevens from the event. Stevens <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/10\/31\/abdul-el-sayed-haley-stevens-spar-eve-michigan-senate-race\/\">told<\/a> the <em>Washington Post<\/em> that she would not discuss the matter further until after Tuesday\u2019s election.<\/p>\n<p>The feud could cost El-Sayed support from Stevens\u2019s primary voters, particularly those in Detroit, where Stevens secured 51 percent of the Wayne County primary vote to El-Sayed\u2019s 45 percent. Some black voters in the city have since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/10\/24\/us\/politics\/el-sayed-black-voters-arab-tensions.html\">said<\/a> that El-Sayed is struggling to make inroads among the crucial voting bloc. El-Sayed defeated Stevens in the primary by less than 1 point.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/hasan-pikers-uncle-behind-michigan-senate-ad-blaming-israel-for-egg-prices-case-study-in-antisemitism\/\">ad in question<\/a> came from Cenk Uygur, the cofounder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/left-wing-media-watchdog-defends-jennifer-granholms-wealth-after-helping-her-become-a-millionaire\/\" title=\"Left-Wing Media Watchdog Defends Jennifer Granholm\u2019s Wealth After Helping Her Become a Millionaire\">left-wing media company<\/a> The Young Turks and the uncle of El-Sayed\u2019s inflammatory primary campaign surrogate, Piker. It depicts a married couple in the grocery store who blame the price of eggs on Israel and its war on Hamas in Gaza.        <\/p>\n<p>Jewish leaders condemned the spot, which Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JGreenblattADL\/status\/2114521074247532569?s=20\">called<\/a> a &#8220;case study in antisemitism.&#8221; Stevens <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HaleyforMI\/status\/2114753640669848010?s=20\">said<\/a> it was &#8220;wrong&#8221; and did &#8220;nothing to help Michigan Democrats win up and down the ballot.&#8221; Rather than disavow the ad\u2019s contents, El-Sayed\u2019s campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/jewishinsider.com\/2026\/10\/el-sayed-campaign-distances-ad-israel-cenk-uyghur\/\">released a statement<\/a> noting that it did not make the ad.<\/p>\n<p>There seemed to be a breakthrough on Friday, when Stevens said El-Sayed\u2019s condemnation of the spot was &#8220;expected.&#8221; The statement was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/10\/30\/politics\/live-news\/midterm-election-congress?post-id=cmvv3r7sl000o3b6urr2nowpz\">reportedly the result<\/a> of talks between Stevens and El-Sayed held &#8220;Thursday night and into the early Friday morning hours&#8221; and mediated by Clyburn. But signs emerged almost immediately that the detente would not come: Stevens\u2019s fiance, a Jewish Democrat and attorney who has said he plans to vote for El-Sayed\u2019s Republican opponent, Mike Rogers, said in a Friday afternoon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2026\/10\/30\/haley-stevens-fiance-abdul-el-sayed-support-warning\/\">TMZ interview<\/a> that he didn\u2019t think Stevens was &#8220;going to be supporting Abdul El-Sayed very much longer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While El-Sayed is unwilling to welcome Stevens on the campaign trail, he\u2019s rallied with plenty of controversial surrogates, chief among them Piker, who has said that &#8220;America deserved 9\/11&#8221; and that the United States is &#8220;pound for pound&#8221; responsible for more terrorism than al Qaeda. El-Sayed invited Piker to campaign with him in Michigan on at least five occasions during his primary against Stevens, though he has since distanced himself from Piker, referring to him as\u00a0 a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/watch-abdul-el-sayed-doesnt-want-to-talk-about-the-streamer-in-california-he-brought-to-michigan\/\">streamer in California<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Piker caused another headache for El-Sayed on Friday, when, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/jewishinsider.com\/2026\/10\/hasan-piker-compares-suburban-jewish-voters-to-white-supremacists-in-online-rant\/\">screaming rant on his livestream<\/a>, he referred to the heavily Jewish Detroit suburb of West Bloomfield as a &#8220;KKK neighborhood.&#8221; The &#8220;supremacist attitude&#8221; in the suburb is &#8220;identical&#8221; to the Klan, Piker added. He was reacting to a news segment showing canvassers for El-Sayed\u2019s campaign knocking doors in the area. El-Sayed called the comments &#8220;inappropriate&#8221; but did not condemn Piker himself.<\/p>\n<p>El-Sayed has campaigned with other controversial figures as well. On Thursday, he <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/abdul-el-sayed-campaigns-with-louis-farrakhans-antisemitic-student-minister-who-recently-pushed-conspiracy-theory-that-jews-ran-the-slave-trade\/\">appeared alongside<\/a> Benton Harbor mayor Marcus Muhammad at a get-out-the-vote rally.
