Trump is ruthless,\u201d Newsom said at a field office in Nashua on Oct. 24. \u201cI\u2019m sorry. We need to be a little more ruthless.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stated purpose of Newsom\u2019s visit was to campaign for a slate of Democrats running in high-profile races for the House and Senate this fall and to help his party drive turnout. But it doubled as a way to test the waters for a presidential run that will require support in New Hampshire, a state that has for decades helped make or break the dreams of ambitious politicians like Newsom.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\">Gov. GOP voters have a decidedly negative opinion of Newsom, thanks, in part, to years of cable TV punditry portraying him as a coastal elite, and at least some Democrats believe their party should look elsewhere if they hope to win in purple states.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" ><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI mean, I love him. I think he\u2019s wonderful,\u201d said Denise Rudman, a retired high school teacher in Manchester. \u201cThere\u2019s just something about, you know, \u2018liberals from California,\u2019 and I\u2019m sure a lot of people feel the same way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet in the Trump era, Newsom is betting that \u201cCalifornia\u201d is anything but a dirty word and could actually differentiate him in a crowded primary field. At a town hall in Exeter, he quipped that he had just left the \u201cmost un-Trump state in the United States of America\u201d as he opened his remarks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI say that with deep pride and privilege,\u201d Newsom said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\" ><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-25\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Newsom\u2019s notoriety as the governor of the biggest state in the country partially explains why he\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/polls\/president-democratic-primary-polls-2028.html\">consistently ranked<\/a> as one of the top contenders for the Democratic nomination in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2028-elections\/\">2028<\/a>. Polls show Newsom behind only former Vice President Kamala Harris, the 2024 nominee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\u2019s also a frequent target of the president, who has dubbed him \u201cNewscum\u201d and last year called for his arrest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Newsom has played nice with Trump when California has needed federal relief, most recently with the Palisades wildfire, and insists that he\u2019s \u201calways had an open hand, not a closed fist.\u201d But Newsom clearly relishes the confrontation and has returned the jabs with over-the-top mimicry on social media.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\" ><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-26\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to stand up and punch a bully in the mouth,\u201d Newsom told reporters in Manchester. \u201cThis guy is \u2014 he\u2019s the wrecking ball. What he\u2019s doing in this country is jaw-dropping. There needs to be accountability, and we need to be tougher.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That feud took on a new dimension this year when Newsom revealed that the Justice Department was investigating his wife over tax-related conduct, a step that he said amounted to political intimidation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/4769820\/gavin-newsom-trump-doj-impact-2028\/\"><strong>GAVIN NEWSOM SAYS TRUMP DOJ INVESTIGATION WON\u2019T DETER 2028 RUN: \u2018QUITE THE CONTRARY\u2019<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Newsom\u2019s celebrity was apparent as he weaved his way through New Hampshire, now the third state on the Democratic presidential nominating calendar, shaking hands and posing for pictures with voters who stood in line for upward of 10 or 15 minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At each event, his stump speech mentioned that Trump deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles first and continues to pick fights in court, most recently over California\u2019s voter rolls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere will not be a fair and free election in the United States of America if we don\u2019t take back the House of Representatives this year,\u201d Newsom said. \u201cWe got to knock on those doors, we got to make those phone calls, we got to send those text messages out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nancie Chandler, a finance manager from Derry, New Hampshire, said she thought that Newsom was knowledgeable and articulate about the stakes of the election and considered him a strong contender for president.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe\u2019s aware of what we\u2019re going through, not only in New Hampshire or California, but really the whole of the country,\u201d Chandler said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, Newsom won\u2019t have the anti-Trump lane to himself should he run next year, and he\u2019s relatively untested outside of his home state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rudman, the retired high school teacher, said she preferred <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/pete-buttigieg\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"410\">Pete Buttigieg<\/a>, the former South Bend, Indiana, mayor who placed second in New Hampshire\u2019s Democratic <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/democratic-primary\/\">primary<\/a> in 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe is thoughtful. He is eloquent,\u201d Rudman said. \u201cHe\u2019s brilliant, and he speaks for a lot of people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other Democrats will gravitate to candidates who lack Newsom\u2019s pragmatic streak and represent the party\u2019s progressive wing. Despite its reputation for being a libertarian-leaning state, New Hampshire\u2019s Democratic base has embraced left-wing politics, as evidenced by Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/bernie-sanders\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"41\">Bernie Sanders\u2019s<\/a> (I-VT) two primary wins there in 2016 and 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arya Shams, a candidate for state representative in Nashua, said he would like to see someone such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) or Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) run for president. Khanna, a Silicon Valley congressman, is running to the left of Newsom on a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/premium\/4763240\/california-wealth-tax-passes-blue-states-may-adopt-similar-measures\/?srsltid=AYCX9vKfyE4id0JpVNXphAZIqyTf-U4wzqDPySIFsDiwRQPZd9vxilaN\">wealth tax<\/a> that will appear on the California ballot in November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s nothing personal against Gavin Newsom, but Gavin Newsom is against some very important policies in his home state,\u201d Shams said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Newsom, asked what a post-Trump message might sound like after the midterm elections, leaned into economic populism, speaking of the need to \u201cdemocratize our economy\u201d and address the concentration of wealth and power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As he finishes out his final year as governor, Newsom is also quick to put his record front and center and rattled off almost a dozen policies, from paid family leave to a higher minimum wage, with the speed of a fast-talking auctioneer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4778886\/nicki-minaj-to-rally-alongside-trump-metro-detroit-sunday\/\"><strong>TRUMP: NICKI MINAJ HAS \u2018ONE HELL OF A BEAUTIFUL A**\u2019<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m practicing what I preach every day,\u201d Newsom told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cI\u2019ll go down the damn list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have painted our vision because I\u2019m doing it every damn day, and I think that\u2019s what we\u2019ll all start to share,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>David Sivak (@DISivak) is Congress and campaigns editor at the <\/em>Washington Examiner<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANCHESTER, New Hampshire \u2014 Gov.
