L. Louise Lucas and six other people were selling marijuana while it was still illegal for most people and also hid their profits.<\/p>\n<p>The indictment said the sales began in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Lucas is charged with crimes including racketeering conspiracy, conspiracy to possess and distribute marijuana, and conspiracy to launder money.<\/p>\n<p>Lucas, first elected in 1991, suggested the charges were racist.<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmvjnfcfw00453b6t1qh0k9md@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\u201cToday, the FBI, the Department of Justice, and the full weight of the federal government have been wielded against an 82-year-old great-grandmother,\u201d she said in a statement. \u201cI grew up under Jim Crow. I\u2019ve seen what happens when people in power try to silence those who stand up to them. She mentions Jim Crow, points out she is an 82-year-old great grandmother, and says \u201cI\u2019m not new to this, I\u2019m true to this\u2026I will not back down.\u201d https:\/\/t.co\/YaPwx0bwBh<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Bill Melugin (@BillMelugin_) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BillMelugin_\/status\/2113280395496325293?\">October 22, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>A Department of Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/virginia-state-senator-indicted-leading-criminal-marijuana-distribution-enterprise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news release<\/a> said the charges target a \u201cracketeering conspiracy involving marijuana distribution, money laundering, honest services fraud through bribery, maintaining drug-involved premises, possession of firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking, and wire fraud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLouise Lucas has served in a position of public trust in the Commonwealth of Virginia for over three decades,\u201d Attorney General Todd Blanche said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe charges alleged in this indictment reveal the behavior of a public servant who put her own financial interests before the people she was elected to serve. Our federal prosecutors will continue to be guided by the facts and evidence that led a grand jury to indict Ms. Lucas and her alleged co-conspirators,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>FBI Director Kash Patel said \u201ca close-knit group of family members and associates\u201d worked with Lucas to build a \u201ccriminal marijuana enterprise\u201d and used her \u201cposition as Chairwoman of the Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee\u201d to insulate the enterprise from legal scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>The release said Lucas allegedly \u201capproved and directed activities of the enterprise, including arranging for the acquisition and distribution of 100 kilograms or more of marijuana and supervising the laundering of marijuana proceeds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The release said Lucas allegedly conspired with two daughters \u2014 Lisa Lucas-Burke and Theresa Lucas-Lamb \u2014 and Lucas-Lamb\u2019s son, Ryan Eichelberger, in the scheme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn August 2022, Lucas allegedly paid $750,000 for a 100% stake in a business that was the shell holding company for a co-conspirator\u2019s expected Virginia recreational marijuana license. Lucas allegedly failed to report the interest obtained in this entity on her required Statement of Economic Interests forms,\u201d the release said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLucas allegedly met with the co-conspirator at her office at the capitol complex to receive a partial repayment and spoke with other officials, including legislators, about the co-conspirator\u2019s qualification for a recreational marijuana license depending on her receipt of a bribery payment from the co-conspirator,\u201d the release said.<\/p>\n<p>On May 6, the FBI executed federal search warrants at stores selling marijuana.
