Gavin Newsom last week on social media for coming out against a proposed wealth tax for his state.<\/p>\n<p>In a lengthy post published to the social media site X Friday, Ruffalo called the governor\u2019s decision to oppose a wealth tax \u201cdisqualifying for anyone with ambitions for higher office as a Democrat, or a Republican, for that matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s hope Gavin gets some sense and walks this back,\u201d Ruffalo wrote in apparent despair. \u201cIt\u2019s crazy that this is what he chooses to spend his political capital, and part of his legacy, doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTime and time again, he goes with corporate interests over the well-being of the people, even after his own bipartisan legislature votes for something,\u201d the enraged Hollywood actor added.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">It\u2019s beyond sad. It\u2019s beyond disappointing; at this point, it\u2019s disqualifying for anyone with ambitions for higher office as a Democrat, or a Republican, for that matter, to be fighting to keep billionaires from being taxed while kids don\u2019t have health insurance and the cost of living goes sky-high\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mark Ruffalo (@MarkRuffalo) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MarkRuffalo\/status\/2111089436993679377?\">October 16, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Continuing his post, the far-left, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/paid-marvel-actor-mark-ruffalo-launches-attack-capitalismpaid-marvel-actor-mark-ruffalo-launches-unhinged-attack-capitalism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anti-capitalist actor<\/a> compared Newsom to Republican President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGavin, we aren\u2019t looking for the Democratic version of Trump,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThat was a good goof. Please try something else. It\u2019s tired. The people need a champion, man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA real, bona fide champion who isn\u2019t just tough in tweets or press conferences, but tough when it comes to the real imbalances people are struggling with every day: billionaires vs. people and the planet,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n<p>Ruffalo\u2019s anger centers around California Proposition 40, a deeply unwanted constitutional amendment up for a vote next month that would impose a one-time 5 percent tax on the net worth of state residents whose assets are valued at $1 billion or more.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom has made it clear for months now that he opposes the amendment. In fact, he even penned a whole <a href=\"https:\/\/gavinnewsom.substack.com\/p\/its-time-for-a-national-billionaires\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Substack column<\/a> about it over the summer, in which he explained that he\u2019d rather a wealth tax be passed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/gavin-newsom-calls-national-billionaires-tax-trigger-economic-reset\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on the national level<\/a> instead of on just the state level.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">It\u2019s time for a national billionaires tax and a new social contract.<\/p>\n<p>10% of Americans own two-thirds of the wealth. Wages have stagnated. The cost of living has skyrocketed.<\/p>\n<p>The system is fundamentally broken\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GavinNewsom\/status\/2070496029280276571?\">June 26, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>But the column wasn\u2019t what sparked Ruffalo\u2019s backlash \u2014 it\u2019s what Newsom did earlier, near the beginning of this month.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/politics\/2026\/10\/newsom-tax-propositions-november-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CalMatters<\/a>, a nonprofit news organization based out of California, the governor came out in support of Proposition 42, a countermeasure that would cancel out Proposition 40 and henceforth \u201cprohibit retroactive taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all agree that Californians deserve to have their retirement and life savings protected from new state taxes so those savings are there when they need them,\u201d Newsom reportedly said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>According to Democratic California Rep. Ro Khanna, who in unrelated news was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/elon-musk-threatens-legal-action-ro-khanna-congressmans-outrageous-lie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">threatened with a lawsuit<\/a> after he smeared Elon Musk this past summer,\u00a0lobbyists for Proposition 42 are now using the governor\u2019s statements on the matter to lobby against Proposition 40.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is so sad to see Gavin Newsom be the poster child to ban any new wealth tax on billionaires,\u201d Khanna <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RoKhanna\/status\/2110121469825184106\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> in an X post.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom has also faced backlash from Debru Carthan, the vice president of the Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy voting yes on Prop 42, he\u2019s showing California his true colors,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/laist.com\/news\/climate-environment\/gavin-newsom-backs-prop-42\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">she said<\/a> in a statement. \u201cHe\u2019d rather millions of children and families lose their healthcare than ask a couple hundred billionaires to finally pay their fair .\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear whether Newsom\u2019s critics are aware that he does desire a wealth tax \u2014 just one imposed federally, not by the states.
