Now, Senate candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MiddleEastEye\/status\/2111989555234836605\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abdul El-Sayed claims<\/a> his name means \u201cServant Leader.\u201d Which is it?<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-video\" data-status=\"hidden\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Abdul El-Sayed is currently saying that his name \u201cAbdul\u201d means servant and that\u2019s why his parents chose it.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s funny because when Abdul was running for Governor in 2018 he claimed numerous times that his parents named him Abdul after Paula Abdul. https:\/\/t.co\/s6dF4BmsXy<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 MAZE (@mazemoore) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mazemoore\/status\/2112001150262071646?\">October 19, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Both, probably. Admittedly, it\u2019s tempting to paint this as a lie to the American people, yet it\u2019s much more likely that El-Sayed\u2019s parents had several factors driving their decision.<\/p>\n<p>While this deprives us of the perfect opportunity to use a bad Paula Abdul pun asking El-Sayed to be \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=V26f420X9r4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Straight Up<\/a>\u201d with us, it allows a much more detailed analysis of how the political climate on the left has shifted since 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The Council on American-Islamic Relations\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cair.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/CAIR-Muslim-Candidates-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">counted<\/a> 57 Muslim elected officials in 2018. This summer, however, CAIR <a href=\"https:\/\/cairaction.org\/press-release\/record-breaking-cair-cair-action-identify-255-muslim-elected-officials-in-new-2026-directory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed<\/a> that number had risen to a record-breaking 255.<\/p>\n<p>More Muslims are running for office, and more are winning. Our whole political system has shifted rapidly toward Mecca.<\/p>\n<p>What changed?<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump\u2019s so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2019\/09\/26\/trumps-muslim-ban-really-was-muslim-ban-thats-what-data-suggest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Muslim ban<\/a> during his first term appears to be the primary suspect. This ban, which went into effect six months into Trump\u2019s first year, severely limited the number of immigrants from five major Islamic nations: Iran, Syria, Libya, Yemen, and Somalia.<\/p>\n<p>The political fallout from that policy is visible in the data.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/ispu.org\/poll\/american-muslim-poll-2020-amid-pandemic-and-protest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poll<\/a> by the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding revealed that Muslim voter registration jumped by 18 percentage points from 2016 to 2020. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/asian-america\/muslims-u-s-are-more-politically-engaged-ever-study-finds-n1244879\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC News<\/a> reported\u00a0that Trump\u2019s ban acted as a catalyst for Muslim political engagement.<\/p>\n<p>There is no better example than Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s victory in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>According to an AP <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/poll-election-2025-demographics-voters-latino-black-b59518a2c8d2f37f857fe1ac32995b9a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poll<\/a>, nine in 10 Muslim voters in New York City supported Democratic Socialists of America candidate Mamdani last November. Other Muslim politicians with formal or informal DSA ties, such as Rep. Rashida Tlaib and Rep. Ilhan Omar, have experienced similar support.<\/p>\n<p>To be clear, El-Sayed has tried to distance himself from the <a href=\"https:\/\/program.dsausa.org\/#democracy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DSA<\/a> \u2014 which is understandable, since they want to abolish the presidency, eliminate the Supreme Court, and nationalize the means of production. It\u2019s difficult to win in a battleground state with such extreme ideas.<\/p>\n<p>However, that doesn\u2019t erase the fact that many DSA politicians have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/squad-endorses-abdul-el-sayed-days-before-michigan-democratic-senate-primary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">endorsed<\/a> him, that he\u2019s appeared at their events, and that the <a href=\"https:\/\/mdcdsa.org\/chapterupdate\/26-08-07\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DSA has admitted<\/a> to helping campaign for him.<\/p>\n<p>He may not claim the title of DSA for himself, but these progressive ideas will chase him to the finish line this November.<\/p>\n<p>All that being said, the recent entrance of Islam into the American left helps explain why El-Sayed now readily highlights his name\u2019s Arabic roots, whereas highlighting the musical origin of his name likely played better in a less Islamized America. He\u2019s playing the audience like a fiddle.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I don\u2019t want to appear \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WJntPcuOheQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cold Hearted<\/a>,\u201d but there is one last matter to be addressed: El-Sayed might not have lied about where his name came from, but he glossed over an important translation detail.<\/p>\n<p>Saying \u201cmy name means servant leader\u201d plays well on the campaign trail, but it\u2019s a slight mistranslation.<\/p>\n<p>In a 2018 video, El-Sayed explains that his full name is \u201cAbdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed,\u201d which means \u201cServant of the All-Merciful, Praiseworthy, the Master.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, yes, \u201cAbdul El-Sayed\u201d means \u201cservant leader,\u201d but when we step back, we see the name doesn\u2019t describe a leader serving his people, but rather a leader serving \u201cthe All-Merciful\u201d \u2014 Allah. But does El-Sayed\u2019s name actually have any serious implications?<\/p>\n<p>Not necessarily. Caleb means \u201cdog,\u201d Rachel means \u201cewe,\u201d and Tabitha means \u201cgazelle,\u201d yet we don\u2019t expect them to start acting like animals. Names don\u2019t determine destiny.<\/p>\n<p>What matters, however, is what his potential victory signals about the cultural and religious landscape.
