Elissa Slotkin laid out Democrats\u2019 plans for another round of lawfare against President Donald Trump\u2019s administration in a public interview last week, saying the prosecutions would be a \u201cdeterrence message\u201d to scare young conservatives away from politics.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to students at the University of Chicago, Slotkin <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/10\/18\/opinion\/moderate-elissa-slotkin-pretends-shes-a-stickler-for-defending-democracy-but-this-is-how-the-bolshevik-left-play-the-game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cThe people around Donald Trump \u2026 have no immunity the way the president does. \u2026 So you go after the people who do his bidding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to look at these signature cases and not just focus on the president, but on the people who enabled him,\u201d Slotkin <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ThinkerChicago\/status\/2111560599167795418?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">continued<\/a>. \u201cI want young people coming out of school to say, \u2018Should I go work for the Trump administration? Like that sounds fun. I might get an opportunity.\u2019 I want them to be like, \u2018Lord, that might be buying myself a ton of problems that I don\u2019t want, and so let me avoid participating in that.\u2019 I want that deterrence message.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Slotkin then doubled <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ElissaSlotkin\/status\/2111984197380542859?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">down in a post<\/a> on X days later: \u201cAmerica must be a place where the rule of law still matters. Those laws should apply to everyone equally. If you have aided in the corrupt use of U.S. taxpayer dollars to benefit the President or his family, or you have violated the law in order to carry out guidance from the President, you should be held accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd given how rampant that corruption appears to the average American, people looking to work for his Administration should realize that while the Supreme Court has granted the President immunity, it has not done the same for those who do illegal things at his behest,\u201d her post continued.<\/p>\n<p>The warning followed a September speech Slotkin gave in which she had already identified targets for her lawfare, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slotkin.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Slokin_Carnegie_Speech_9_30.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">saying<\/a> \u201cthe goal here is to have a list of \u2018signature cases\u2019 that go after some of the most obvious and harmful abuses of taxpayer dollars.\u201d The list of targets includes former DHS secretary Kristi Noem, Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, and U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro. Slotkin herself describes these efforts as \u201cretribution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s not the only Democrat calling for jailing their opposition. <\/p>\n<p>Democrat Senate candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/6156794-nixon-defends-moody-jail-call\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Angie Nixon<\/a> said last week that her Republican opponent, former attorney general of Florida Ashley Moody, should be \u201clocked up and punished in jail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/6156794-nixon-defends-moody-jail-call\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">asked<\/a> whether those comments sounded \u201clike a desire to weaponize the justice system,\u201d Nixon told the CBS <em>Face the Nation<\/em> audience that \u201cit\u2019s not a desire to weaponize the justice system. It\u2019s designed to actually hold corrupt politicians accountable for what they\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These recent Democrat promises to continue lawfare are merely the latest in a long series. Last year House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WesternLensman\/status\/1995598214637199761?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>: \u201cThe one thing that should be clear \u2014 to all of these Republican extremists and sycophants and the people who are either actively involved in corruption, violating the law, engaged in extrajudicial activity \u2014 is that the statute of limitations for any crimes being committed now is five years. It will extend well beyond the end of the Trump administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the Democrat Party has gone far beyond threatening lawfare. Democrats spent the lead-up to the 2024 election trying to throw President Donald Trump in jail and successfully jailing some of his allies.<\/p>\n<p>New York Attorney General Letitia James \u2014\u00a0who <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-fraud-new-york-letitia-james-lawsuit-a3a2c2569440c24bd5c5262103cb8390#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">campaigned<\/a>\u00a0on using lawfare to target Trump and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/09\/21\/james-lawsuit-trump-longstanding-battle-00058128\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called<\/a>\u00a0him an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=D1yj0NKSsuU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">illegitimate president<\/a>\u201d \u2014 accused Trump of inflating his personal wealth to get more favorable loan terms in a case in which there were no victims. A court ultimately found the judgment against Trump to be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/08\/21\/court-finds-ny-judgment-against-trump-unconstitutional-throws-out-515m-penalty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unconstitutional<\/a>. The case was so political that even anti-Trump CNN political commentator Jonah Goldberg\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2024\/01\/11\/jonah-goldberg-trump-civil-trial-politicized\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called<\/a>\u00a0the \u201cprosecution \u2026 a mistake\u201d and \u201cvery political.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, Trump was also facing 34 felony counts in Manhattan in a lawfare case led by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Bragg claimed payments Trump made to his then-lawyer Michael Cohen to transfer to pornographer Stormy Daniels (purportedly to keep quiet about an alleged affair) were illegal, though Bragg\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/05\/alvin-braggs-trump-indictment-is-even-more-pathetic-and-partisan-than-we-could-have-imagined\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">failed to clarify<\/a> exactly how such alleged actions were illegal.<\/p>\n<p>(Notably, the Federal Elections Commission, the Department of Justice (DOJ), and the Southern District of New York\u2019s U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/31\/guilty-trump-verdict-will-keep-good-people-from-running-for-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declined<\/a> to bring the case because it lacked any legal basis.)<\/p>\n<p>A Manhattan jury convicted Trump on all 34 counts in May of 2024, but scheduling for his sentence was <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/11\/19\/alvin-bragg-is-suddenly-willing-to-postpone-his-witch-hunt-indefinitely-now-that-it-cant-keep-trump-from-becoming-president\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">delayed<\/a> after his 2024 victory.<\/p>\n<p>Running concurrently to <em>those<\/em> lawfare challenges was Democrat lawfare at the federal level. President Joe Biden\u2019s attorney general, Merrick Garland, appointed Special Counsel Jack Smith to prosecute the former president. Trump was indicted in June of 2023 for allegedly mishandling classified documents. Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the case one year later, ruling Smith\u2019s appointment was unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>Smith brought a second <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/11\/07\/democrats-must-end-their-lawfare-prosecutions-of-donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indictment<\/a>\u00a0against Trump in August 2023, targeting the then-former president for questioning the administration of the 2020 election. The Supreme Court later addressed the case, ruling 6-3 that a president has \u201cabsolute immunity\u201d for \u201cactions within his conclusive and preclusive constitutional authority\u201d and \u201cat least presumptive immunity\u201d for all \u201cofficial acts.\u201d The court sent several questions pertaining to the charges against Trump back to the lower court to determine whether his actions constituted an official act. Smith <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/08\/27\/read-trump-indictment-00176509\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filed a superseding indictment<\/a>\u00a0against Trump but then <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/11\/25\/jack-smiths-end-of-lawfare-charges-against-trump-proves-it-was-a-political-witch-hunt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dropped<\/a> the case after Trump won the 2024 presidential contest.<\/p>\n<p>Democrat politicians, attorneys, and other power figures extended their lawfare far beyond Trump himself, targeting the people who worked for the president \u2014 the same group of people Slotkin now says she hopes to prosecute, in part to intimidate young people who might work in a Republican administration. Trump\u2019s personal aide, Walt Nauta, was a co-defendant in the classified documents case and charged for allegedly moving boxes. Nauta pleaded not guilty, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-documents-case-walt-nauta-carlos-de-oliveira-case-dismissed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">charges<\/a> were later dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Other Trump allies were not so \u201cfortunate.\u201d Both Steven Bannon and Peter Navarro were convicted and spent several months in jail for defying a subpoena issued by the sham Jan. 6 Committee.<\/p>\n<p>As Slotkin herself said, Democrats\u2019 plans for \u201cvictory\u201d are focused on dealing out \u201cretribution\u201d to Republicans regardless of status, from the president to low-level staffers.
