Directed by Greta Gerwig, known for “Barbie,” the adaptation features notable casting choices, such as Meryl Streep voicing Aslan-traditionally portrayed by a male actor-and Emma Mackey as Jadis, the White Witch. In the trailer, Jadis is seen destroying a historic pub linked to the Inklings, a literary group that included C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, which has led some viewers to interpret the scene as symbolic of “blowing up the patriarchy.” Fans are also noting a shift in Uncle Andrew’s character, portrayed as a harmless explorer instead of the scheming villain from the book, and expressing skepticism over the film’s messaging, especially given Gerwig’s previous film “Barbie” that promoted a girl-power theme. Critics fear these alterations may alter the core messages of the Narnia stories, which emphasize morality, the rise and fall of evil, and the role of Jesus-like figures like Aslan in transforming evil into good. Tho Gerwig claims to be a lifelong fan of the series and hopes for a positive outcome, some fans remain wary about the changes and their implications for the legacy of C.S. Lewis’s beloved tales.

A clip from the new trailer for Netflix’s upcoming “Chronicles of Narnia” series has fans fearing what the real message of the adaptation will be.

Greta Gerwig, the director of the 2023 hit film “Barbie,” is helming the project, called “The Magician’s Nephew,” which is a prequel to “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.”

Fans were already concerned when she cast Meryl Streep as the voice of Aslan, who is male in the books.
