My experience prosecuting criminal cases taught me that one-size-fits-all policies do not deliver those long-term changes we need,\u201d Evans said in a Thursday <a class=\"LexicalEditorTheme__link\" href=\"https:\/\/content.govdelivery.com\/accounts\/WASEATTLE\/bulletins\/42e7986\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a> from her office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"LexicalEditorTheme__paragraph\">\u201cSmart justice means holding people accountable who repeatedly break the law, and also helping those who are ready to be helped, while maintaining supervision and accountability as that process plays out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"LexicalEditorTheme__paragraph\">Socialist Democratic Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson appeared to praise the new program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"LexicalEditorTheme__paragraph\">\u201cConnection Court recognizes that people with complex needs need tailored approaches. If individuals are cycling through our criminal legal system over and over that means something isn\u2019t working, and this is a thoughtful, intentional approach to break that cycle while maintaining accountability,\u201d she said according to the release from the City Attorney\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"LexicalEditorTheme__paragraph\">Some public defenders called the new model \u201cwatered-down\u201d and similar to \u201cCommunity Court\u201d \u2014 a system established in 2020 during the height of the George Floyd protests, which was ultimately scrapped in 2023, the Seattle Times reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"LexicalEditorTheme__paragraph\">Connection Court provides pathways for potential work with the Downtown Seattle Association\u2019s ambassador program, a second-chance employer, where participants clean city streets downtown and help tourists and locals, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"LexicalEditorTheme__paragraph\">Separately from the Thursday press conference, Evans also announced the High-Priority Repeat Offenses (HiPRO) system which targets people who frequently cycle through the legal system and \u201cseeks firmer consequences for those who have taken advantage of Seattle\u2019s compassion,\u201d according to the release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"LexicalEditorTheme__paragraph\">Wilson has previously come under scrutiny for unconventional policies she has proposed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/no-cnn-the-super-bowl-does-not-need-more-politics-it-needs-none\/\" title=\"No, CNN, The Super Bowl Does Not Need MORE Politics; It Needs None\">address criminal justice<\/a>.
