Considering the car had been in gestation since <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/wholemars\/status\/2110785469873344937\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017<\/a>, it needed to impress people bigly to get any attention.<\/p>\n<p>Impress bigly it did. The new Roadster \u2014 now with a much more Lotus Esprit-inspired wedge shape \u2014 can do 0-60 in less than a second.<\/p>\n<p>It can also stick to the road like nothing else \u2014 and it can even fly. It could do rolls. It could do crazy gymnastics. It certainly didn\u2019t have any demonstration of long-range flight.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In recent years, there have been many advancements in electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, known as eVTOL\u2019s. While there are some working models, there are still many engineering roadblocks to road-worthy cars that can truly fly.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAircraft are extremely sensitive to weight, whereas with ground vehicles you want them to have bumpers and crumple zones and all that,\u201d Roger Connor, curator for vertical flight at the Smithsonian\u2019s National Air and Space Museum, told CNN Thursday before the event. \u201cInevitably, something that is a hybrid between the two is going to be a poor performing aircraft and a poor performing vehicle, and also quite expensive.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s not an aircraft, obviously; it\u2019s a car that can do levitation for a short while \u2014 which is pretty amazing, in and of itself. It\u2019s obviously going to be quite expensive, and if you don\u2019t know that, you probably need to bone up on your automotive shopping skills. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/cant-beautiful-things-academic-says-ferrari-ev-needs-ugly-expand-imagination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ferrari<\/a> doesn\u2019t make a bargain-basement econobox, for instance.)<\/p>\n<p>This is amazing stuff \u2014 the stuff that happens when you dream big. The Roadster amply demonstrated that its ability to handle the air on the underside and side of the car means, more importantly for sports car enthusiasts, that this thing can create downforce as well as lift. In addition to going fast in a straight line, it\u2019s also going to be able to go quickly around corners.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s what happens when you dream. Elon and Tesla continue to do that, while the rest of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/desperate-ford-turns-importing-less-effective-batteries-china-power-electric-vehicles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">automotive milieu stagnates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In America, anyone with brains, passion, and hard work can still change the world. There\u2019s a reason Elon\u2019s here and not in South Africa.
