However, the decision was met with criticism due to concerns about her alleged anti-Israel bias and inconsistent human rights record. Pillay, a prominent figure in international law and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has been criticized for ignoring abuses in authoritarian regimes like Cuba, North Korea, and Iran, while frequently criticizing Israel. She also faced accusations of yielding to Chinese government pressure, notably declining to attend a Nobel ceremony for Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo and allegedly sharing dissident names with Chinese authorities. Additionally, her office has been accused of complicity in the Uyghur genocide by sharing dissident facts with Chinese officials. Conversely, she has been outspoken against Israel, including signing for sanctions and criticizing its actions in gaza, culminating in a report that accused Israel of committing acts of genocide, which critics say unfairly framed Israeli actions and provided legal cover for hamas. Critics, including UN Watch and various editorialists, argued her record disqualifies her for the award and criticized the Nobel Committee for ideological bias. historically, the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to figures whose peace achievements are questionable, raising concerns about the committee’s shift toward politically motivated recognition driven by a leftist, anti-Western alliance, which undermines the prize’s credibility and the principles it aims to uphold.

The Nobel Committee recently awarded the 2026 Peace Prize to South African Navanethem “Navi” Pillay “for her efforts to promote peace and international law.” The announcement drew immediate criticism, as observers raised serious questions about her anti-Israel bias and the inconsistency of her commitment to human rights.

Pillay was born in South Africa and, in the early years of her legal career, provided defense for anti-apartheid activists, such as Nelson Mandela. Later on, her activism landed her a number of senior posts at international organizations, including serving as a judge at the International Criminal Court from 2003 to 2008, the court on which the Trump administration imposed new sanctions last week. Pillay was also the UN high commissioner for human rights from 2008 to 2014.

Given her prominent positions, one could reasonably expect Pillay to have been a consistent critic of authoritarian regimes and a firm defender of human rights. Yet a 2011 UN Watch study found that during her first two years as high commissioner (September 2008–June 2010), she made no public remarks on human rights abuses in 146 countries and issued no criticism of any of the 34 countries Freedom House rated as “Not Free,” including Cuba, North Korea, and Iran. By contrast, she issued more than 20 statements on North African and Middle Eastern countries, nearly half of which were critical of Israel.

Pillay also faced criticism for yielding to pressure from authoritarian governments. As high commissioner, she not only declined an invitation to the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony for imprisoned Chinese pro-democracy activist Liu Xiaobo but didn’t even send a representative from her office. Liu’s empty chair became a symbol of Beijing’s repression. Another Chinese rebel, Yang Jianli, who represented Liu, called Pillay’s decision “a clear and unequivocal abdication of her responsibilities as high commissioner,” which he attributed to “direct pressure from the Chinese government.” Liu died in custody in 2017.

During the last days of the first Trump administration, it designated Beijing’s treatment of Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang as “genocide” and “crimes against humanity.” In contrast, Emma Reilly, a former official in the Office of the High Commissioner and a whistleblower, has accused Pillay’s office of being “complicit in the Uyghur genocide” during her tenure. Reilly alleged that the office shared with Chinese authorities the names of dissidents (including Uyghurs) scheduled to speak at the Human Rights Council, exposing them and their families to further repression. She described the practice as “criminal” and a serious breach of trust.

Although Pillay has mostly kept quiet regarding Beijing’s genocide of the Uyghurs, she has been vocal in her criticism of Israel. UN Watch has documented many of Pillay’s anti-Israel actions and words, including her signing a 2020 manifesto calling for sanctions to be imposed on “Apartheid Israel.” She also sent a letter to President Biden asking the U.S. to take punitive measures against Israel in connection with the 2021 conflict with Hamas.

The Wall Street Journal noted that South Africa, Pillay’s home country, was one of the relatively few nations to host senior Hamas officials after the group’s attack on Oct. 7, 2023. Shortly after, South Africa filed its genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

In September 2025, the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, chaired by Pillay (2021- 2025), published a report stating that between Oct. 7, 2023, and July 31, 2025, Israel was responsible for “four of the five genocidal acts defined by the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide,” with the intent to destroy the Palestinian population in whole or in part. The report also “concluded that Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and then Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, have incited the commission of genocide.”

The report is framed as a legal analysis of Israel’s conduct in Gaza under the Genocide Convention following Hamas’ Oct. 7 attacks, without examining the atrocities committed by Hamas itself (earlier, separate reports by the same commission had found that Hamas and other groups committed war crimes that day). The result is a document that focuses exclusively on Israeli actions and, in practice, supplies Hamas and its supporters with legal cover. It is therefore unsurprising that Hamas congratulated Pillay after the Nobel announcement.

Critics of Pillay’s award were blunt. Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, said Pillay’s “troubling record on antisemitism and gross breach of ethics in presiding over a notorious UN commission utterly disqualifies her from such an award.” A Wall Street Journal editorial argued that because Pillay could not distinguish “the difference between genocide and a defensive military campaign against a homicidal adversary that hid behind civilians in mosques, schools and hospitals,” awarding her the Peace Prize is unlikely to “promote the cause of peace.”

Pillay’s 2026 award continues a disturbing pattern of the Norwegian Nobel Committee elevating figures whose record on peace was either doubtful or even anti-peace. Yasser Arafat received the 1994 prize despite chairing the Palestine Liberation Organization and pursuing armed struggle against Israel rather than peace throughout his life. In 2009, Barack Obama received the prize despite the absence of major peace agreements and while overseeing ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many criticized the Nobel Committee for rewarding aspirations, rhetoric, and potential rather than real accomplishment. A USA Today/Gallup poll shortly afterward found 61 percent of American adults said he did not deserve it.

These examples show how the Norwegian Nobel Committee has steadily blown its credibility by using the Peace Prize to spread leftist worldviews rather than consistently recognizing genuine peacemaking and the courageous defense of human rights. Such an approach is increasingly shaped by what critics call the red-green alliance — the convergence of Democrats, leftists, and socialists with radical Islamists, bound together mainly by hostility to capitalism, Israel, and the West.

Institutions influenced by this alliance often apply high human-rights standards to democracies and their allies while remaining comparatively silent on authoritarian regimes with shared political ideology. This red-green alliance has also shaped much of the post-Oct. 7 campus activism in the United States and contributed to recent unrest in Europe.

When a supposedly respected institution prioritizes ideology over demonstrated achievement, it erodes public trust in its awards. Each instance diminishes the significance of the Peace Prize and demonstrates that the committee is more devoted to a political agenda than to its stated principles. The award’s credibility will not recover until the committee stops treating political alignment as a substitute for genuine achievement.

Helen Raleigh, CFA, is an American entrepreneur, writer, and speaker.
