When asked about her best and worst moments in the debate, Raman stated she was in a &#8220;fugue state&#8221; and couldn&#8217;t remember much, which critics argue was a misuse of the term &#8220;fugue,&#8221; which actually refers to a dissociative episode involving unexpected travel and memory loss. Analysts suggest her explanation might have been an attempt to excuse her performance, which was widely viewed as poor, especially as she was decimated by Bass in the debate. Observers noted her non-answer on key issues, such as her stance on firing LA Police Chief Jim McDonnell, further undermining her image. Some believe the debate moderators were biased against her, and her performance was considered lackluster compared to bass\u2019s confident and composed appearance. Few online news sources list any other candidate in American history who has ever cited amnesia after losing a political debate.<\/p>\n<p>The closest example was when then-GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry suffered a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-biden-suffers-brain-freeze-cant-recite-preamble-declaration-independence-butchers-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brain freeze<\/a>\u201d and \u201clapse of memory\u201d while answering a debate question in 2012:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">2011: Rick Perry forgets the third federal department he was promising to eliminate.<\/p>\n<p>Perry had already dropped steeply in polls after prior poor debate performances. The \u201coops\u201d moment seemed to prove he lacked preparation and is regarded as his campaign\u2019s death knell. https:\/\/t.co\/LP6Uzk2kGt<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Recount (@therecount) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/therecount\/status\/1694421730322678039?\">August 23, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Critics believe the reason Raman trotted out the \u201cfugue\u201d or amnesia excuse was that, according to several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-10-13\/bass-vs-raman-heres-who-won-la-mayoral-debate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles Times<\/a> columnists\u00a0who actually watched the hour-long battle, she got entirely decimated in the debate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mayor won the debate, if we\u2019re judging by forensics,\u201d one columnist, Gustavo Arellano, said. \u201cShe rarely looked down at her notepad, unlike Raman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something I\u2019ve never noticed about Raman before \u2014 either a new nervous tic, or an indication that the city councilmember can\u2019t seem to speak with conviction, which has been a frequent critique against her,\u201d Arellano added.<\/p>\n<p>Columnist Steve Lopez agreed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis debate could have been a knockout punch for Raman, and instead, I think Bass won the night, not just by touting her achievements and responding sharply to criticism, but by seeming to have a better command of the moment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The third columnist, Lorraine Ali, also threw shade at Raman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaman just needed to knock the mayor off balance \u2014 then keep her there for an hour,\u201d she said. \u201cBass came off composed, confident, and in command of the conversation, while Raman appeared less sure of herself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fairness to Raman, the debate moderators appeared to be biased against her, according to an analysis by Joel Pollak of the California Post:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">California Post Opinion Editor @joelpollak weighed in on Tuesday night\u2019s mayoral debate between Nithya Raman and Mayor Karen Bass, highlighting what he saw as a clear bias from the moderators toward one candidate. https:\/\/t.co\/rkQ3LIrqJ1 https:\/\/t.co\/xs846LQRYb<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 California Post (@californiapost) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/californiapost\/status\/2110240697047495044?\">October 14, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>But Raman did herself no favors with some of her non-answer answers, including one regarding Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell, whom many have said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/leftists-celebrated-charlie-kirk-assassination-fired-rapid-rate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deserves to be fired<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During the debate, for example, she repeatedly declined to commit to a timeline for firing him, prompting Bass to accuse her of being unprepared to lead the city of Los Angeles, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/10\/14\/us-news\/nithya-raman-says-she-was-in-fugue-state-debating-karen-bass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Raman is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and has the endorsement of the Los Angeles chapter of DSA, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-09-02\/democratic-socialists-endorse-raman-in-la-mayoral-race\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color: #f7f7f7;
