pfTrackEvent(&#039;Cornell\u2019s President Understands \u2018Responsibility.\u2019 He Should Insist Jane Doe Do The Same&#039;); return false;\" title=\"Printer Friendly, PDF &#038; Email\">                     <span id=\"printfriendly-text2\" class=\"pf-button-text\"><i class=\"mdi mdi-printer\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span>                     <\/a>                 <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<div class=\"pf-content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re apparently at the part of this <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/10\/14\/the-cornell-7-fallout-is-infantilized-women-and-villainized-men\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/10\/14\/the-cornell-7-fallout-is-infantilized-women-and-villainized-men\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cCornell Seven\u201d saga<\/a> where the Ivy League university\u2019s president needs to go through a ritualistic struggle session, enshrined by the political left, and he chose the most fitting location: The New York Times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview published this week, Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff, surely having already tortured himself with grubby lawyers and P.R. midwits, said he was sorry for an incident he had no control over, the details of which are unclear (even the people directly involved are in dispute about what happened).<\/p>\n<div id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3261632654\" class=\"d-flex justify-content-center fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 fdrlst__b89e9-entity-placement\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think that this is a problem that relates to 20-year-olds, 21-year-olds leaving home for the first time,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/10\/13\/nyregion\/cornell-president-interview-missteps.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/10\/13\/nyregion\/cornell-president-interview-missteps.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">he said<\/a>, \u201ccoming into an environment where there\u2019s access to alcohol, where there is unfortunately in some cases access to drugs<em>. <\/em>And they\u2019re not prepared. And of course they\u2019ve been exposed to social media, pornography, misogyny.\u201d He described the fallout of the \u201cgang rape,\u201d as alleged by a woman known publicly as Jane Doe, as \u201ca challenge for us\u201d at Cornell. \u201cWe have to respond by building character, judgment, responsibility, care for each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I\u2019m so sorry something happened that I had no part in and that actually may not have happened at all. Please don\u2019t hurt me!<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s the part where Kotlikoff mentioned \u201ccharacter, judgment, responsibility\u201d and \u201ccare for each other\u201d that\u2019s most important. So he <em>does<\/em> understand those concepts, though either not in the way he should or not in such a way that he\u2019s willing to demand them of the school\u2019s student body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything we know about <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/10\/06\/even-jane-does-own-story-about-the-cornell-7-is-a-bad-look-for-her\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/10\/06\/even-jane-does-own-story-about-the-cornell-7-is-a-bad-look-for-her\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jane Doe\u2019s allegations<\/a> between the night of the incident in October 2024 and now is that in the days immediately after, she was adamant that what happened was consensual, legal, and of her own volition. About two weeks later, she seems to have changed her mind about what she told those involved, and her sorority sisters who learned about it. Then last month, she filed a lawsuit against seven of her peers at Cornell and others, claiming she was gang-raped and was incapable of controlling anything that happened after she got drunk at her sorority house. That includes her attendance at two bars, where she continued to drink, and her solitary foot commute to a fraternity house, where she <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/10\/09\/the-cornell-7-lesson-dont-do-drugs-stay-in-school\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/10\/09\/the-cornell-7-lesson-dont-do-drugs-stay-in-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">snorted ketamine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of that, according to Doe\u2019s lawsuit, was someone else\u2019s problem to handle, to ensure she remained the angel she was in her own mind right up until intoxication. It wasn\u2019t up to her, a 20-year-old woman, to take care of herself. <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/09\/30\/dear-women-your-bad-life-choices-at-cornell-frat-parties-shouldnt-be-national-news\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/09\/30\/dear-women-your-bad-life-choices-at-cornell-frat-parties-shouldnt-be-national-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Why should it have been<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the way, things like character, judgment, responsibility, and caring for one another aren\u2019t the purpose of universities, even elite ones. It\u2019s in the purview of parents and loved ones to impart those things to children, into adulthood. A little reinforcement doesn\u2019t hurt, but at the moment of legal maturity, a more passive approach is presumed: mutual respect and courtesy, not overt instruction. Not to put too fine a point on it, but everyone has to eventually accept responsibility for himself (or herself, as the case may be).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Cornell\u2019s president should be \u201csorry\u201d for anything, it\u2019s for perpetuating a certain environment at the university.
