Analyzing nearly 100,000 complaints and 50,000 documents, the OCC found that during president Joe Biden’s governance, banks broadly employed “reputation risk” policies that often disadvantaged groups like MAGA supporters, pro-life advocates, religious organizations, and sectors opposed by the administration, such as firearms, oil, and private prisons. Specific cases included shutdowns of accounts related to conservative merchandise, Christian organizations, and industries like energy and firearms, citing concerns over “hate,” “violence,” or ideological disagreements. The report indicates that these practices amount to discriminatory debanking, fueled by fears of political backlash and regulatory pressure. The OCC and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau are now investigating these practices further, with the OCC emphasizing the need for fair access to banking services nonetheless of political or religious views. The findings follow an executive order by President Trump aimed at ensuring equitable banking access for all Americans.

The nation’s largest banks closed accounts and cut off credit to MAGA merchants, pro-life groups, Christian organizations, and other customers over politics and religion between President Donald Trump’s first and second terms, according to a federal banking regulator’s review released Wednesday.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency examined the nine biggest national banks it supervises: JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citibank, Wells Fargo, U.S. Bank, Capital One, PNC, TD Bank, and BMO.

All nine had policies that required, encouraged, or influenced staff to deny or limit service because of a customer’s political or religious beliefs or lawful business activity, the OCC reported in a news release.

The 47-page report is titled, “Debanked: Guaranteeing Fair Banking for All Americans.”

Reviewers looked at nearly 100,000 complaints and about 50,000 documents, the news release states.
