Ilhan Omar, an expert scholar in the Somali civil war says that the congresswoman\u2019s father was a military commander in a dictatorship that killed up to 200,000 people in the East African country.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/10\/13\/us-news\/ilhan-omars-father-was-loyal-to-somali-dictator-misrepresented-himself-as-a-refugee-source\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a>, Mohamed Haji Ingiriis, an Oxford University historian and researcher, said that Omar\u2019s father \u201cmisrepresented himself as a refugee\u201d when he was in fact a perpetrator of the chaos in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Omar\u2019s home was raided on Monday as part of an investigation into whether she misrepresented herself as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/breaking-ilhan-omars-staff-changed-birthdate-official-records-citizenship-may-fraudulent-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">being a minor<\/a> when she received U.S. citizenship through her father in 2000.<\/p>\n<p>While public sources up until 2019 listed the Minnesota Democrat\u2019s birth year as 1981, a viral video calling into question the route of her citizenship led Omar to say she was born in 1982, the<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/10\/13\/us-news\/rep-ilhan-omars-staff-got-her-birthdate-changed-officially-after-being-elected-to-congress-records\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> New York Post<\/a> reported Tuesday. Had she been born in 1981, she would have been 18 or 19 at the time of her naturalization, and thus ineligible for citizenship through her father as a minor.<\/p>\n<p>Omar has maintained her birth records were destroyed when she left the war-torn country. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/day-omar-raid-trump-issues-dire-warning-midterm-voters-dont-let-state-get-ransacked-destroyed-like-minnesota\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raid on Monday<\/a> might have sought information about whether she continued to knowingly maintain a false birthdate, the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/10\/13\/us-news\/the-missing-immigration-records-on-rep-ilhan-omars-dad-that-may-have-prompted-raid-on-dc-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>The allegation about\u00a0 Omar\u2019s father \u2014 while likely not legally actionable \u2014 throws a further wrench into a potential case against her citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>The father was named \u00a0Nur Omar Mohamed, also known as Nur Said Elmi Mohamed. He <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5854193\/ilhan-omar-father-coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">died in 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While Omar has described her father as an \u201ceducator\u201d who fled Somalia for the United States in 1995, Ingiriis said that he was \u201cwas a full colonel\u201d in the military regime of Somalia dictator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Mohamed-Siad-Barre\">Siad Barre<\/a>, the New York Post reported Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>That regime killed up to 200,000 people before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/son-somali-dictator-found-ohio-taking-millions-medicare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barre<\/a> was deposed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNur Said was a military officer who was loyal to the regime until the end,\u201d Ingiriis told the newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was part and parcel of those who caused and created the mayhem they \u2018fled\u2019 to live comfortably in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ingiriis said Nur received training in either the former Soviet Union or Egypt.<\/p>\n<p>He continued to hold a post in Barre\u2019s bloodthirsty army until the strongman lost power. Before then, Nur had played a \u201csignificant role\u201d in Somalia\u2019s war with Ethiopia, a former fellow officer named Yusuf Ismail Faraton <a href=\"https:\/\/sahanjournal.com\/remembering-minnesotans-lost-to-covid-19\/he-was-loved-by-everyone-the-somali-community-remembers-nur-omar-mohamed-who-died-of-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> a Minnesota outlet in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe only fled when the dictatorship fell in 1991,\u201d Ingiriis told the New York Post. \u201cHe was the beneficiary of the military regime and should not have been given asylum whatsoever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that Nur would have had to lie to American authorities about his time in Barre\u2019s military to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/deep-dive-omar-says-somalis-always-seen-fabric-america-just-long-always\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">get asylum<\/a>. U.S. law does not allow refugee status to be granted to \u201cany person who ordered, incited, assisted or otherwise participated in the persecution of any person on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Ingiriis told the newspaper, Nur \u201cassisted the dictator to remain in power for so long\u201d and \u201cwas protecting his career and his colonel position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it is very wrong for the United States to host war criminals,\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Ingiriis\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis creates a constant resentment and sadness among the real victims who were terrorized by the military regime under which Nur Said loyally served.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Omar\u2019s father came to the United States after escaping to Kenya.<\/p>\n<p>Omar has maintained that the raid was conducted at the behest of President Donald Trump and meant to silence her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns.
