The current Michigan secretary of state is running against GOP U.S. Rep. John James, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2026\/10\/11\/abdul-el-sayed-barack-obama-donald-trump-kristen-welker\/92203728007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Today<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Obama began his endorsement video of El-Sayed, \u201c250 years ago, America was founded on a simple idea: This country belongs to all of us, not just the wealthy, not just the well-connected, everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, that idea is under attack, and Michigan is where we fight back. That\u2019s why I\u2019m asking you to support Abdul El-Sayed for the United States Senate,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>Obama cited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/former-biden-special-assistant-angry-el-sayed-got-decked-rogers-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El-Sayed\u2019s<\/a> support for expanding the federal government\u2019s power and role over health care, describing it as a \u201chuman right.\u201d El-Sayed backs <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-government\/fact-check-would-abdul-el-sayed-raise-taxes-to-pay-for-medicare-for-all\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medicare for All<\/a>, which fact-checkers note will mean raising taxes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crfb.org\/blogs\/would-medicare-all-require-middle-class-tax-hike\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approximately $3 trillion<\/a> per year over the next decade, on average.<\/p>\n<p>For perspective, the entire federal budget for fiscal year 2026 was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/publication\/61882\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$7.4 trillion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Obama also cited El-Sayed\u2019s opposition to endless wars as a reason he supports him.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jmuqs82OaXU?si=N4idtxH-hUIm7x57\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>  During an NBC \u201cMeet the Press\u201d interview over the weekend, El-Sayed pointed to Obama\u2019s election as president in 2008 sparking in him a belief that he could run for office one day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so grateful to have been a young man in my 20s with Barack Hussein Obama as president. I would never have seen, you know, myself running for office,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>El-Sayed recounted that as a young man in 2007, he had met former President Bill Clinton, who told him that he had a gift for public speaking and should consider running for office in the future.<\/p>\n<p>El-Sayed said that at that time he did not think someone with his name, Abdul Mohamed El-Sayed, could win.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut then the next year I watched Barack Obama run for and win the presidency. Fundamentally changed what I thought was possible in American politics,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Abdul El Sayed unwittingly makes the case that voters shouldn\u2019t blame Trump for Biden\u2019s messes that he inherited, and that Obama has a Muslim background:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink about just think about the circumstances in which he came into office, an economy that was fundamentally failed on the brink of crisis? We are certainly better off than we would have been had there been another president.<br \/> But we also understand that that was a really difficult period in our country. That financial crisis was really, really tough.<br \/> There were also circumstances as a function of the circumstances. He was handed things that he tried to take on and improve.<br \/> That\u2019s not a fault of his. That is just circumstance. \u201c<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople like me with names like mine can\u2019t [run for office]. For example, El-Sayed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2026\/10\/11\/abdul-el-sayed-barack-obama-donald-trump-kristen-welker\/92203728007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asserted<\/a> that Obama \u201cperpetuated war\u201d and \u201cviolated civil liberties,\u201d and he added at the time that \u201cthe list of his failures goes on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2020, you said, \u2018We are not better off than we were before him,&#8217;\u201d Welker noted. \u201cDo you still feel that way today?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that he worked really hard [under difficult] circumstances. And in some ways the country was definitely better.
