Trump highlighted Columbus’s role in discovering the New World, fostering exploration, and laying the groundwork for the United States, including the installation of a Columbus statue at the White House and restoration efforts like fixing the Columbus Fountain in Washington, D.C. He praised Italian-American communities and underscored the importance of recognizing Columbus’s courage and achievements.

In contrast, President Joe Biden’s 2021 Columbus Day proclamation acknowledged the painful history and atrocities inflicted upon Indigenous peoples, emphasizing the need to confront and address these historical wrongs, and highlighting the negative impacts of European exploration on Native communities.

The article also presents perspectives from conservative commentators, notably Rod Martin, who defends Columbus as an adventurous, pioneering figure whose discoveries advanced Western civilization and argues that criticisms, including accusations of genocide and disease transmission, are historically unfounded or exaggerated. Martin contends that many of Columbus’s alleged sins were committed by others long after his death and stresses his qualities of daring and visionary exploration, framing Columbus as a model of courage and progress.

President Donald Trump went all in celebrating Columbus Day on Monday, even including a reference to the HBO series “The Sopranos.”

The White House posted on social media, “In this Administration, Christopher Columbus is a hero!”

In this Administration, Christopher Columbus is a hero!

Happy Columbus Day! https://t.co/HrRnqKd9l4

— The White House (@WhiteHouse) October 12, 2026

In Season 4 of “The Sopranos,” in an episode titled “Christopher,” Tony Soprano, played by James Gandolfini, strongly defended the famous explorer.

In the scene, Tony’s son Anthony is reading the liberal “People’s History of the United States” by Howard Zinn.

Tony’s wife, Carmela, recounts to him that Anthony’s teacher told the teen that “if Columbus were alive today, he would go on trial for crimes against humanity.”

“Your teacher told you that?” Tony asks.

“It’s not just my teacher.
