But the issue has become kind of clouded over the public execution debate,\u201d York said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">York highlighted that public executions stopped \u201ca long time ago.\u201d The <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense\/4759933\/firing-squad-execution-nidal-hasan-public-hegseth-says\/\">last public execution<\/a> in the United States was in 1936 in Owensboro, Kentucky, where a black man named Rainey Bethea, convicted of raping and killing a 70-year-old woman, was lynched in front of roughly 20,000 people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">York said having witnesses to executions is important, but expressed caution at making them public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have witnesses to executions, but that\u2019s to make sure that the state is actually carrying them out responsibly. The debacle in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/tennessee\/\">Tennessee<\/a> recently is good reason why we need to do that. But still, publicly?
