The agent attempted to detain Oscar Belgal, a 28-year-old undocumented immigrant from the Dominican Republic, in the Bronx.During the arrest, the agent opened fire, hitting Belgal in the neck while Belgal was in his car with his five-year-old son. The child was unharmed. This event caused public outrage and protests, with NYC Mayor Zohran mamdani strongly condemning ICE, calling for its removal from the city, and criticizing its actions as unsafe and aggressive. Mamdani demanded federal action to cease ICE enforcement in New York and expressed that ICE’s presence makes the city less secure. The incident sparked protests outside the hospital where Belgal was hospitalized and drew widespread attention on social media. The police reported that at least seven rounds were fired by ICE agents. Mamdani’s vocal opposition to ICE and the violent incident led to demonstrations and clashes between protesters and police, emphasizing the community’s demand for the agency to leave the city.

A shooting in New York City involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent brought mobs into the streets as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he wants ICE out of the metropolis.

ICE agents went to detain Oscar Belgal at 4 p.m. in the Marble Hill area of the Bronx.
