Is there one you would take out?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not answer either. Is there one you would take out?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani refuses to answer either question, instead describing the anniversary as a day of mourning for both sides of the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>He then accuses Israel\u2019s government of using the Hamas attacks to justify what he describes as an ongoing genocide:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that it brings up the most horrific memories for so many in the city, and also, for others, it is a day that is continuing, and it\u2019s in the Israeli government\u2019s use of it as a justification for a genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Fox News (@FoxNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FoxNews\/status\/2108217495563739470?\">October 8, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>  \u201cI believe that there must be room to mourn every single life,\u201d he said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/mamdani-doubles-down-anti-israel-oct-7-statement-backlash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News<\/a>. \u201cThere must be room to mourn the lives of the more than 1,100 that Hamas killed three years ago; there must be room to mourn the 74,000 Palestinians that the Israeli government has killed since.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He then tied the date to the war that followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that it brings up the most horrific memories for so many in the city, and also, for others, it is a day that is continuing, and it\u2019s in the Israeli government\u2019s use of it as a justification for a genocide,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The statement he was defending was published on Wednesday, the third anniversary of the attacks.<\/p>\n<p>The Western Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/mamdani-marks-anniversary-oct-7-attacks-vile-move-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> on the statement that day. In the post, Mamdani wrote that the day marked three years since \u201cthe horrific war crimes of October 7,\u201d that Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others, and that the city grieved with neighbors who still carried that loss.<\/p>\n<p>But the next sentences turned to Israel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe suffering did not begin nor end that day,\u201d he wrote. \u201cIt instead continued through the Israeli government\u2019s devastating, ongoing genocide in Gaza, in which it has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians, including more than 21,000 children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani said that more than 1,400 Palestinians had been killed since what he called a \u201cso-called ceasefire,\u201d and that New Yorkers\u2019 tax dollars funded \u201cthese war crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He closed by saying occupation and apartheid could not be accepted, and that the federal government was complicit with every arms shipment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/10\/07\/us\/mamdani-october-7-anniversary-israel-statement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN<\/a> reported that he was booed on arrival at an Oct. 7 vigil in Union Square on Wednesday night.
