And so we tore down our monuments; we condemned our own history,&#039; Rubio said.%20https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/10\/08\/rubio-only-the-christian-west-could-build-the-greatest-civilization-in-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">         <i class=\"mdi mdi-email\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i>         <span class=\"visually-hidden\">Share Article via Email<\/span>       <\/a>     <\/li>\n<li class=\"article-share-email m-0\"><span class=\"printfriendly pf-button  pf-alignleft\">                     <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/thefederalist.com\/#\" rel=\"nofollow\" onclick=\"window.print(); pfTrackEvent(&#039;Rubio: Only The Christian West Could Build The \u2018Greatest Civilization In The World\u2019&#039;); return false;\" title=\"Printer Friendly, PDF &#038; Email\">                     <span id=\"printfriendly-text2\" class=\"pf-button-text\"><i class=\"mdi mdi-printer\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span>                     <\/a>                 <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<div class=\"pf-content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The West\u2019s achievements are the result of a distinct character shaped by ancient Greece, Rome, and Christianity, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday, urging Western nations to defend that inheritance while warning against open borders and declining national pride.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking from the Pnyx in Athens, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/rubio-sounds-campaign-ready-open-borders-globalism-speech-ancient-greek-ruins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rubio<\/a> described Western institutions as the \u201coutward expression of more fundamental qualities we see in the Ancient Greeks \u2014 qualities that can\u2019t be reduced to any particular political system or theory.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-289067953\" class=\"d-flex justify-content-center fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 fdrlst__b89e9-entity-placement\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rubio said ambition, invention, curiosity, individuality, and exploration are characteristics that ultimately helped create the West.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey were the characteristics of a people \u2014 expressed in their traditions, their stories, their imagination; in the qualities they demanded of their citizens; in the things they lived and fought and died for,\u201d Rubio said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among those qualities, Rubio said, was the idea that the universe had an inherent rational order that humans could discover. He then connected that understanding to Western science, philosophy, and, most importantly, Christianity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt paved the way for the Gospel of Jesus Christ to find fertile soil in Europe and flourish into the empire of Christendom. It was the foundation of the riches of Christian theology \u2014 of Augustine and Aquinas and the whole tradition of natural law,\u201d he said. Rubio highlighted that civilization had a \u201ccommon view of man and his place in the universe,\u201d a \u201cdistinctive understanding o virtue,\u201d and \u201cobjective standards and ideals to strive towards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rubio traced that inheritance through European Christendom to the United States, describing our forefathers as \u201cborn in Athens, formed by Rome, baptized in Christendom,\u201d and \u201cendowed with the English genius for liberty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Founders also connected self-government to moral character, with John Adams and George Washington frequently stressing that the Constitution \u2014 and our institutions \u2014 were made only for a moral and religious people and would be inadequate for any other kind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rubio also described a distinctly Western understanding of what sacrifice means \u2014 thanks to the Greeks \u2014 and compared it to how Third Worlders view sacrifice. Christian martyrs and patriots who were loyal to their principles were willing to sacrifice their lives for if needed, whereas Iranian rulers who glorify death worship death itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>Our<\/em> heroes may be willing to die for their cause; but our heroes do not worship death,\u201d Rubio pointed out. \u201cWe take the West\u2019s conception of these things \u2013 heroism, honor, duty \u2013 we take these things for granted. We assume that these somehow are universal to all people in all times and in all places. They are not. They are the product of a distinct character, a distinct character which arose here and shaped the whole story of the civilization that came after it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rubio\u2019s distinction underpins the greater problem facing Western nations and their immigration policies. A people make a nation, and western values are not universal. Therefore, importing people who do not share Western values risks the nation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rubio warned that Western nations increasingly denounce their inheritance and linked that repudiation to declining national confidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe word \u2018nationalism\u2019 became a dirty word. And so we tore down our monuments; we condemned our own history. And in too many places, we taught our children to be ashamed of the countries they would inherit,\u201d Rubio said. \u201cIn the process, we opened our borders and outsourced our industry, and allowed our militaries to wither and to decay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And those open borders have had serious consequences throughout the West. Western leaders have stopped considering whether newcomers can fully assimilate into Western culture, which has now led to societal friction across the West. <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/5a80c4fded915d74e6230579\/The_Casey_Review_Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Casey Review<\/a> found in 2016 that Britain failed to integrate the Third World migrants it welcomed, and as a result there were areas in Britain where women were subjected to abuse due to cultural and religious differences, isolation, and other anti-Western \u201cnorms.\u201d The study recommended integrating newcomers to British values, history, and laws.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In France, Islamist gunmen slaughtered 12 people in the 2015 Charlie Hebdo attack after the magazine published a depiction of Muhammad. While the attackers were born in France, the attack proves that extremist, Third World beliefs don\u2019t just disappear upon entering Western soil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, right here at home in Dearborn, Michigan, Americans have watched Third World foreigners chant \u201cDeath to America\u201d and say America deserved 9\/11.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Politicians and so-called intellectuals who think Western civilization is something to be apologized for or ashamed of see no reason to protect their inheritance and culture from the mass migration of people whose own culture will destroy Western people\u2019s inheritance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s an inheritance that Rubio and the Trump administration take seriously. It\u2019s why Trump has closed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2026\/02\/02\/migrant-encounters-at-the-us-mexico-border-are-at-their-lowest-level-in-more-than-50-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">southern border<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2025\/12\/10\/thanks-president-trump-and-secretary-noem-more-25-million-illegal-aliens-left-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deported<\/a> more than 600,000 illegal aliens, and even convinced nearly 2 million illegal aliens to self-deport. In fact, it\u2019s estimated that net migration in 2025 was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/blogs\/random-samplings\/2026\/01\/historic-decline-in-net-international-migration.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">negative<\/a>, meaning more people left the country than came to it. The findings show that immigration trends that Americans were told to accept can be reversed, and with it, the country can be saved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In order to save the West, and in this case, lead the West to saving itself, the Trump administration is putting <em>our<\/em> inheritance first and using that inheritance to shape its policies, including immigration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Brianna Lyman is an elections correspondent at The Federalist.
