Here are two things that, despite hype from a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >national news media heavily invested<\/a> in convictions, definitely aren\u2019t relevant.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>That members of the Chi Phi fraternity had a meeting after the alleged incident in 2024 to discuss it.<\/strong> Thomas Giuffra, the attorney representing the accuser known as \u201cJane Doe,\u201d is on TV almost daily making all types of wild claims. One of them <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/10\/07\/us-news\/cornell-7-accusers-lawyer-claims-frat-bros-had-meetings-to-cover-up-gang-rape-allegations\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/10\/07\/us-news\/cornell-7-accusers-lawyer-claims-frat-bros-had-meetings-to-cover-up-gang-rape-allegations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this week<\/a> is that Chi Phi convened at least one meeting some time after the alleged \u201cgang rape\u201d at the frat house \u201cto try and cover this up and to be part of the conspiracy of silence.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Public evidence is that Doe reportedly told police that two people, presumably Chi Phi members, entered the room where the incident took place and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejournal.ie\/cornell-gang-rape-case-timeline-7179384-Oct2026\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.thejournal.ie\/cornell-gang-rape-case-timeline-7179384-Oct2026\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> they were \u201cshutting it down,\u201d which suggests they believed there was, at minimum, something inappropriate taking place. Something inappropriate, like, say, a drug-fueled orgy in a frat house. More evidence indicates the fraternity\u2019s president was uneasy about what he had heard about the incident, having ultimately told members that Doe should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/10\/01\/nyregion\/cornell-rape-accusation-reporting.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/10\/01\/nyregion\/cornell-rape-accusation-reporting.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">not be admitted<\/a> to an upcoming Halloween party.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>That anyone who learned of the incident was horrified by what they witnessed or heard is not a scandal. I\u2019d hate to walk in on anything similar anywhere, let alone in a place I do business or socialize. Nor is it a scandal that the fraternity members would discuss it at a meeting.<\/p>\n<p>As of now, it\u2019s unclear what was even talked about at the meeting. One Cornell student, a woman, reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/US\/cornell-police-received-tip-chi-phi-fraternity-seeking\/story?id=137009526\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/US\/cornell-police-received-tip-chi-phi-fraternity-seeking\/story?id=137009526\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told investigators<\/a>, \u201cChi Phi held a meeting essentially to get all of the men on the same page about what happened. I know for a fact there are group messages about the situation.\u201d An actual frat member, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/video\/137051232\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/video\/137051232\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told police<\/a> that there was no meeting called to specifically address the incident, but rather a regularly scheduled gathering. \u201cWe didn\u2019t have a meeting about it specifically,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was our weekly chapter meeting. We go through a bunch of stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One could imagine that \u201ca bunch of stuff\u201d might include instruction not to do drugs or have group sex in the frat house, even when it\u2019s consensual. It\u2019s also possible that members were given additional information on the incident, as is typical in any organization where a controversy or conflict takes place. It\u2019s no different than a CEO convening a town hall to address mass firings or an embarrassing PR crisis. The point is usually a degree of transparency with everyone affiliated, not conspiracy. In such cases, it\u2019s common for associates to be told that outside inquiries should be directed to a single point of contact, or perhaps to not say anything at all, lest they mistakenly misrepresent facts at hand. That\u2019s not a cover-up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That Doe was sad and cried a lot in the days after the incident. <\/strong>After rumors about what happened at the Chi Phi party sprinted through campus and onto the internet, Doe reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/jane-doe-cornell-university-rape-allegations-text-messages-transcripts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">texted one<\/a> of the men involved that she would only \u201csleep and cry all day.\u201d True, but she also told him, \u201cIt\u2019ll get better.\u201d In any event, Doe on that night, by her <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/09\/30\/dear-women-your-bad-life-choices-at-cornell-frat-parties-shouldnt-be-national-news\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/09\/30\/dear-women-your-bad-life-choices-at-cornell-frat-parties-shouldnt-be-national-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">own admission<\/a>, had drunk to the point of intoxication, smoked marijuana, and snorted copious amounts of ketamine, a drug that induces euphoria.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t think I\u2019m breaking news when I say that a bender like that comes with more than just a hangover. It comes with <a href=\"https:\/\/adf.org.au\/insights\/drug-comedowns\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/adf.org.au\/insights\/drug-comedowns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a crash<\/a>, which is often accompanied by anxiety and depression. I imagine those feelings are potentially compounded in a 20-year-old who might have engaged in some intense, perhaps even shameful, sexual activity while drunk and high.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody could be blamed for feeling a sense of remorse or guilt after a night of partying. It\u2019s normal and often times it\u2019s justified. A person might do a lot of things under the influence that he or she wouldn\u2019t do sober. But if it matters that Doe said she was sad, it matters equally that she also reportedly told people she was fine and that she assured others who were at the incident that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/jane-doe-cornell-university-rape-allegations-text-messages-transcripts\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/jane-doe-cornell-university-rape-allegations-text-messages-transcripts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nothing illegal<\/a> in relation to sex had taken place.<\/p>\n<p>Unless a person was physically present for that October night, he can\u2019t say for sure what happened. Maybe yet-to-be-disclosed evidence will prove she was raped by several frat men. That\u2019s not what the evidence so far indicates, but it\u2019s still a possibility. But just because Doe\u2019s attorney wants to make every detail a scandal doesn\u2019t make it one.
