The premature mailing was not authorized by the Recorder\u2019s Office, which was notified only after it occurred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRunbeck\u2019s error affected only the timing of the mailing. The correct ballots were mailed to the correct voters,\u201d the county recorder\u2019s office added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUpon consultation with the Maricopa County Attorney\u2019s Office, it was determined that the ballots remain valid and do not need to be voided or reissued. Voters may complete and return them normally. Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/2016-election\/results\/map\/president\/arizona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carried the county<\/a> in 2016, 49.5 to 45.4 percent over Hillary Clinton.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Trump responded to the report of Maricopa sending out thousands of mail-in ballots early, saying, \u201cIt\u2019s crooked. So Maricopa just sent out thousands of ballots in error \u2026 and they have to be ashamed of themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the way, there were no errors. Any other report is fake news.<\/p>\n<p>@realDonaldTrump https:\/\/t.co\/C2T202VgZP<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Warren Petersen (@votewarren) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/votewarren\/status\/2031046018192781455?\">March 9, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/az-supreme-court-unanimously-overturns-sanctions-gop-bringing-2020-election-suit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021 audit<\/a> initiated by the Arizona Senate of Maricopa concluded that Biden had won the county in the 2020 presidential race.<\/p>\n<p>However, then-Attorney General Mark Brnovich\u2019s office issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/az-ag-releases-report-finding-fraud-problems-handling-100k-mail-ballots-maricopa-county\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> in April 2022 that noted that Maricopa County had not been forthcoming in turning over all the materials related to the 2020 general election that the AG\u2019s Election Integrity Office had sought, despite multiple requests beginning in September 2021 after the Arizona Senate submitted the findings of its audit.<\/p>\n<p>Brnovich wrote, \u201cWe can report that there are problematic system-wide issues that relate to early ballot handling and verification.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His office found chain-of-custody issues in the handling of mail-in ballots by Maricopa County, concluding, \u201cIt is possible that somewhere between 100,000 and 200,000 ballots were transported without proper chain of custody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In June 2025, GOP U.S. Rep. Abe Hamadeh, whose district is in Maricopa County, <a href=\"https:\/\/hamadeh.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=410\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> to then-U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, \u201cWe have known for years that our election processes in Arizona are flawed and ripe with opportunities for nefarious forces. There appears to be a clear pattern and practice of security breakdowns, system failures, and outright manipulation that must be investigated and remedied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hamadeh lost to Democrat Kris Mayes in the 2022 state attorney general race by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2022\/11\/08\/us\/elections\/results-arizona-attorney-general.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">511 votes <\/a>out of the over 2.5 million cast.<\/p>\n<p>On Election Day that year, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/lake-campaign-produces-map-illustrating-voting-machines-malfunctioned-primarily-gop-areas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Republicans voted<\/a> in significantly larger numbers than Democrats, at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc15.com\/news\/political\/elections\/map-70-polling-places-that-had-ballot-printer-issues-on-election-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">70 voting centers<\/a> in Maricopa County had on-demand ballot printing issues, preventing the ballots from being scanned and counted on site and creating long voter lines.<\/p>\n<p>In Anthem, which is in Hamadeh\u2019s congressional district on the north side of Phoenix, the lines were two hours long in 2022.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Here is the problem w\/ what happened in Maricopa County on Election Day.
