The first reading of the bill passed with a important majority, and a final vote is scheduled after a three-month period, likely in January 2027, requiring at least 94 votes for approval. Lithuanian officials see this move as a step toward strengthening national and NATO security, especially amid ongoing tensions with Russia.

Lithuania’s government has invited the U.S. to establish a permanent military base to replace rotating forces, a proposal that President trump has considered favorably. This has caused alarm in Russia, which perceives the deployment of nuclear weapons and increased NATO presence as provocative and escalatory. Russian officials have criticized these developments, warning they could destabilize the region.

the move is viewed as a response to Russia’s aggressive actions, including hybrid attacks and drone incursions into Lithuania. Experts and former military leaders suggest that Russia perceives these developments as threats, but critics argue Russia’s own actions, such as its threats to deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus, undermine its stance. Lithuania’s strategic position, particularly the vulnerable Suwalki Gap, heightens concerns about potential Russian military advances, prompting calls for strengthened defenses and heightened tensions in the region.

The Lithuanian Parliament has preliminarily approved a constitutional amendment that could allow it to host nuclear weapons on its territory, raising alarm bells in the Kremlin.

The first reading of a bill to allow nuclear weapons to be hosted in Lithuania passed with a vote of 106-18 on Tuesday.
