The author argues that similar risks exist for the U.S. if it abandons its foundational institutions, military strength, and national pride. Emphasizing the importance of recognizing American history and sovereignty, the piece cautions that compromised national independence could lead to diminished global influence. It concludes by urging American voters to reject political ideologies that undermine national sovereignty and foundational values, implying that future elections are critical for maintaining america’s status and security. On Nov. 3, Americans will go back to the ballot box and choose between two paths. One is focused on a revitalized appreciation of America’s civic heritage, and the other is still determined to redefine what America is and has been for the last 250 years. The modern Democrat Party has, by all accounts, embraced the idea of postnationalism and views America’s history, Founding Fathers, and institutions as bad.

You don’t need to look very far to see where this kind of policy leads. Just north of the 49th parallel, Canada, where I live, has experimented with the same type of policies. Then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau once referred to Canada as “the world’s first postnational state,” and what has happened since has been a disaster. Canada is struggling to define and assert itself in the face of a world that is ever-changing and unkind.

If the United States embraces an ethos of postnationalism, it too will render itself impotent. That is why, under no circumstances, can Americans give ground to those who would undermine the institutions that uphold the country you and your forefathers built. America must have a strong economy backed by a stronger military to exert real power on the world stage and thus ensure American primacy and hegemony. Celebrating the Founding Fathers and their struggle against the elements as they colonized a vast, once sparsely populated landmass is necessary for your continued survival — not because these stories or institutions provide nostalgia or patriotism, but because they are the mechanisms by which you exert your existence.

Canada undermined its own existence by arguing that its history, institutions, military, and economy were a force for colonial evil that must be undone. The result is a country that cannot exert its own existence in a meaningful way — so much so that Canada has become dependent on America for its own survival. That is why losing free access to the American economy is an existential crisis. Canada has become used to a level of free access and integrated economic activity that is often reserved solely for members of the United States. If America wants to continue to be what it is, it must protect and preserve what made it America in the first place.

So much of Canada’s infrastructure, trade, human capital, and resources flow south. We Canadians consume American music, media, politics, culture, and even identity. If you ask the average Canadian his opinions on what happened in Canada’s House of Commons last week, he’d draw a blank, but if you ask him about Donald Trump’s latest scandal, he’d be able to talk about it for hours. A lot separates us as countries, sure: our parliamentary traditions, our institutions, and our unique colonial history. However, the differences between American Democrats and Canadian socialists are becoming thinner by the day.

Meanwhile, Canadians have hollowed out and vilified much of our own history and culture. We’ve told ourselves that the Fathers of Confederation were evil men who deserve no praise. We’ve halted our own economic prosperity at every turn by refusing to build the infrastructure needed to get our resources to market, and we’ve created an environment hostile toward high-achieving Canadians.

We can keep telling ourselves we’re victims of American aggression and expansionism, but we’ve been telling the world for at least a decade that Canada is a postnational state that doesn’t have the authority to govern its own territory. Our own king gave a speech from the throne in which he acknowledged Parliament was “gathered on the unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg people.” This means the Crown acknowledges this land isn’t theirs but instead belongs to another nation that never gave it away. If that isn’t us telling the world that we aren’t a sovereign nation, I don’t know what is.

Canadians feel an anger toward the United States that is misplaced because America didn’t do this to Canadians; we did this to ourselves. We allowed our country to be governed by petty tyrants who froze the bank accounts of peaceful protesters. We allowed violent activists to terrorize our resource sector and shut down major projects. We watched passively as our major cities removed the names of our founders from street signs and radical activist groups tore down statues of our monarchs. Yet for some reason, Canadians have decided to be offended over the idea that Lake Ontario is now Lake America.

A country is only a country if it projects itself as such. If you don’t have a functioning navy capable of defending your coasts and commerce, you’re not a country. If your economy is entirely dependent on a foreign power, you’re not a country. If you tell the world that the land you exist upon isn’t rightfully yours, you’re not a country. You are at best a vassal state, whose security is entirely dependent on a superior state and who doesn’t have the right to make the rules.

Americans need to beware of what’s at stake every time they vote. American elections unfortunately are no longer simply about gas prices and conflicts in the Middle East. When one side of the aisle openly opines about the evils of America and embraces political philosophies opposed to the foundations of America, it becomes existential. If you want to avoid ending up like other countries that have begun self-immolating, you must reject any party that embraces the ideas of postnationalism.

Adam Beattie, most commonly known online as iamRobinSkies, is a political strategist, columnist, content creator and campaigner from Vancouver, BC.
